Close up lens and framing prongs

Nikonos owners quickly realize that the 35mm lens alone is pretty useless in less than pristine conditions. To take colourful and sharp photos you need to get closer than the minimum focus distance of 80cm. You can shell out the several hundred dollars for a Nikonos close up rig or you can make your own for around $30.
All you need is a screw on photographic close up lens (No 4) with thread diameter of 58mm and some framing prongs.

The No 4 close up filter screws directly on to the 35mm lens. You must remember to unscrew it underwater and flood the filter-lens space. This setup brings the closest focus to 50cm with a coverage of 30cm.
The prongs are held in place by a mount made from PVC plastic which can be heated with a heat stripping gun and bent into shape before hardening. Brass rod is then bent into shape and cable tied to the PVC mount. Prongs are fibreglass rod attached with heat shrink tube. Rods are 30cm apart 50cm from the lens. The mount is held in place by the tripod mount knob.

Perfect for seadragons and way cheaper than a Nikonos close up.
