Plain Language Statement

I am a post-graduate student at Deakin University, undertaking research for a Doctor of Philosophy degree under the supervision of Associate Professor Judith Trimble.
My thesis will concern the ways in which women were represented in Australian art during the period 1880 – 1930, in portraits, photographic studies and popular illustration. My focus will be on the work of Lindsay Bernard Hall and those artists who were his students at the National Gallery School of Victoria. After completing my degree, I plan to undertake a biography and catalogue of Lindsay Bernard Hall and his work.
An important part of my research will involve developing a file of information about representations of women from that period, the artists who created them and copies of the pictures themselves including portraits, figure or group studies and also photographic studies, which have remained outside public collection. I am also interested in any information that may be available about the pictures. I would be most grateful for whatever assistance you may be able to offer to enable me to build this file.
In order to include any picture, I will require a clear photograph or transparency together with any available background information. I would be pleased to make an appointment with you to photograph your picture(s) and talk about its (their) history. This would take less than an hour of your time. Alternatively, you may prefer, in the first instance at least, to send me a photograph together with whatever information may be available, to be followed perhaps by a telephone interview. I will meet all reasonable costs by arrangement with yourself.
After any interview, whether in person or by telephone, a summary of what has been said will be sent to you for your records. No material will be used without your written consent. In order to maintain your personal security, the location of privately owned pictures will not be given in the finished work and names, including those of any subjects, will not be used without written consent. All provisions of the Copyright Act as regards fair dealing will be observed.
All records will be securely stored at Deakin University according to University guidelines, with identifiable material such as written consents kept separate from other information. Access to information will be restricted to those supervising academics who may need to verify the integrity of the data. This material will be held for at least six years after the conclusion of the project and disposed of securely. You are quite free to withdraw your material from this study at any time and, if you do so, the information given will either be destroyed or returned to yourself.
The information collected will be used in my thesis and may also be used in articles written for academic journals and/or conference papers during the course of my studies, and for the projected biography/catalogue While the length of the thesis itself will prevent distribution to all those involved, I will be pleased to provide a brief statement of outcome and copies of relevant extracts to any who wish this.
