Alfred Edward (Gus) Eastlake worked as a Plumber in conjunction with a Federick Round
at 541 Church St.Richmond circa 1893/1894.
It is said he walked from Melbourne to Corryong, a distance of approx.280 miles by road.
There was a Gold Rush to Mount Elliott near Corryong, circa 1900.
The Depression of the 1890s may have prompted Gus departure from Melbourne.
It is most likely he was the First Plumber in Corryong.
Gus was a keen Sportsman, and is said to have played for Richmond before they
joined the Victorian Football League.
He was heavily involved with the Federal Football and Cricket Clubs at Corryong.
The Federals were the Out of Town Miners that came to Corryong and were named
to commeomerate the Federation of Australia in 1901.
Like some Plumbers of the Era, Gus graduated into Mechanical repairs and in
conjuction with his son opened a Motor Garage called the Federal Motor Garage.
The Corryong Newsagency now stands on this site.
His Obituary in the Corryong Courier (9 Jun.1932) read:
On Saturday afternoon, Mr Alf Eastlake passed away peacefully at his residence, after a short illness.
Born at Ballarat 63 years ago, the late Mr Eastlake spent his early boyhood in that district, later on residing at Manfield.
Coming to Corryong 37 years ago he commenced work as a plumber. With the advent of motor cars he became intersted in the car trade.
As a young man he associated himself actively with cricket and football in the district and for many years was the mainstay of the
Federal Football (of which he was a life member) and Cricket Clubs. For 22 years he was secretary of the former.
As a cricketer he will best be remembered for his ability as a wicket-keeper. His reminiscences of both these sports in the early days
were always listened to with great interest.
The remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the local cemetery on Monday. Rev Crigan officiating at the graveside.
The high esteem in which the deceased was held was shown by the long cortege which followed the remains.
He is mourned by a sorrowing wife, a son (Alf) and daughter (Ada, Mrs Taylor of Lake Boga).
It is said that Alfred jnr.would never drive in Melbourne. The following taken from the Argus, Friday 23 Jul.1926, may explain why ?
Following a collision between a motorcar and a Tramcar in Flinders street on December 4, William Monks, a caretaker and signwriter of Moorhouse street, Richmond, obtained a verdict for £150 damages against Alfred Edward Eastlake, of Corryong, and his son, Alfred Sherwood Eastlake.
