Notes.
At the time Albert Edward Hartley Budd married Mary Cain (1888), Albert gives his age as 23 years, is resident at Lucknow St. and is a Plater.
Albert gives his fathers name as Samuel Hartley, and his fathers occupation as a Boiler Smith.
Mary gives her age as 22 years, and is resident at Park St.
She gives her fathers name as James Cain, and her fathers occupation as a Hawker.
The family appear to have moved to New Jersey, U.S.A.for a period. (See 1901 England Census below).
I could not find Albert Edward Hartley Budd and family in the 1890 U.S.A. Census.
But it must be remembered, that the majority of this Census was destroyed by fire.
However in the 1891 England Census (taken on night 5 Apr.), Albert Hartley (married) is living with his widowed father at 7 Lucknow St. Darlington Durham.
There is also Alberts two younger siblings.
It appears Alberts wife, Mary, and daughter, were still in the U.S.A.

Florences sister, Agnes J.HOLE married Sept.Qtr.1922, David B.THOMAS, Cardiff.
The marriage produced the following 4 children:
- Grace M.THOMAS b.Jun.Qtr.1923, Cardiff.
- Margaret J.THOMAS b.Mar.Qtr.1925, Cardiff.
- Jeannette A.THOMAS b.Sept.Qtr.1927, Cardiff.
- Geoffrey THOMAS b.Sept.Qtr.1930, Cardiff.
Dorothy Josephine Hartley was born DOROTHY JANE HARTLEY, however in adult life never used her middle name Jane, preferring to use the name
Josephine ,which is what she used on her Marriage Certificate and was recorded on her Death.
Dorothy trained to be a nurse at Hull Workhouse Infirmary, Anlaby Rd. Kingston-upon-Hull.
She trained there for three years between May 1910 to May 1913, when she finished her nursing training.
Dorothy then moved to Stockton, practicing as a nurse at Stockton District Workhouse & Childrens Homes, 5 North Terrace, Stockton-on-Tees, for 11 months (May 1913 - June 1914).
Around this time there were very few hospitals, so to see a doctor it would be via a Workhouse.
Henry James Hartley was for 30 years, Foreman Boilermaker for the Cardiff Channel Dry Dock.
He was decorated during the War years, with the B.E.M. for his Meritorious Services to the Ship Repairing Industry.
Henry was a Life Member of the Barry Dock and Wyndham Consevation Clubs.
The informant on his death, was his youngest son, John Hartley, of Jadah St.Pauls Ave.Barry.
The eldest son of Henry James Hartley and Florence Kate Hole, Ernest Edward Hartley, was a Junior Engineer Officer in the Merchant Navy during WW11.
Aboard the M.V.Port Victor, which was torpedoed north of the Azores by a German U-boat, with all lives lost.
Ernest is commemorated at the Tower Hill Memorial in London.
George Edward Cornwell , after leaving school presumably aged around 14 he becomes a Merchant Seaman and then Ships Steward (he travelled the world).
On the 25 Jul.1916 he enlisted at Woolwich, and joined the Army ( CORPS: R.H.R.F.A.) which is the Royal House, Royal Field Artillery.
He was in France twice, returning to England and hospitalised on both occassions due to medical conditions and finally being discharged from the Army on medical grounds (10 Oct.1918), just before the First World War ended.
He was awarded two Bravery Medals, the Victory and British Medals.
In total George spent 810 days in the Army, of which, 284 days were spent in France.
On his enrollment papers, George puts his trade as Ships Steward, aged 22 & 7 months, and residence, 42 Tylney Rd. Forest Gate, East London.
He states his N.O.K is his mother, Clara, of 5 Retreat Rd. Westcliff on Sea, Essex.
It is presumed that George Cornwell met Dorothy Hartley in West Hartlepool after the First World War, whilst his Cruise Ship was in port, you never know it could have be at the boarding house at 21 George St.
The 1911 Census has seamen staying at the boarding house.
Or did George met Dorothy while he was being nursed by her.
