      Notes.

Alfred William Budd, one of 10 children and the second eldest son of William Hartley Budd and Alice Corry of Wallan, married Sarah Sorraghan, the fourth daughter of Nicholas Sorraghan and Margaret Ruxton of Bylands.
Alfred was the youngest of twins (by 5 minutes) born at his Aunts (Mary Luttrell) who was a Midwife, who lived in Marshall Street, Chilwell, Geelong.
Maybe this was the reason, Alfred barracked for the Geelong Football Team.
After his marriage, Alfred and Sarah ran the Post Office at Union Lane, Bylands, before taking up farming pursuits.
The Post Office was later run by Sarahs sister, Annie Quillinan.
Alfred was recognised as an Authority on Horses, competing at many District Agricultural Shows.
A Champion Jumper, he won the High Jump several times, on a horse, called Rainbird.
Alfred was also at the Melbourne Cup in 1890, won by Carbine, when everyone threw their hats into the air. This was capture on Film and appears to have been one of the first Movies taken in Australia.
Also a keen follower of the hounds, Alfred was a member of the Kilmore Hunt Club for 50 years.
He took a keen interest in the Assumption College and Kilmore Football Teams. His son Dick was a Champion Footballer for Kilmore.
After his wifes death (Sarah had suffered for many years from a Kidney disease) and due to poor health (Alfred suffered from Asthma), he moved to Ardmona, growing Lucerne by Irrigation, five times a year, with his son, Leo.
Later he moved to Birchip, to lived with his daughter, Alice where he tended the gardening etc. for the local Parish Priest.
It is said the drier climate at Birchip cured his Asthma.
Alfred was a zealous worker for the Sisters of Mercy, which his Grandaughter (Mary Cecilia BUTLER), joined the Order in ?
He smoked a pipe, and used to light it by sticking a long taper into an open fire, made by folding a piece of paper.
Alfred delighted in the fright his grand children got, when they lit the taper and it flared.
Alfreds sister, Alice May Doughney, lived with Alfreds family at Bylands, some time after her husbands death (31 Dec.1913).
Alfred inherited two parcels of land:

      • 65 Acres of land, valued at 10 pounds per Acre, which was the Northwest section of the original Strangeways Estate at Wallan.
It was owned by Alfreds Uncle, Henry Hartley Budd, who bequeathed the land on his death (19 May 1915) to his brother (William Hartley Budd), his sister (Rosetta Budd), and Nathaniel Templeman Randell.
Since William and Nathaniel predeceased Henry, and as Rosetta was in poor health, she consented the land be granted to Alfred.
The land was originally bequeathed to Henry, by his father (William Hartley Budd Snr.).

      • 165 Acres of land, valued at 1,200 pounds, which straddled the Kilmore Road at Bylands, and was bounded on the Northern Side by Kilmore Lane, on which stood a 6 roomed house, partly of brick and weatherboard, a wash-house, barn, stable cowshed, pigstye, and divided into 3 paddocks, fenced with posts and 7 wires.
The land had been bequeathed to Alfred, by his wife Sarah, on her death (3 Jan.1919).
Sarah had obtained the land in two parcels, which was bequeathed by her mother (Margaret) on her death, 4 Jul.1895:

        • A One-Fourth part which was bequeathed to Edward Leydon (farmer) and James King (butcher).
They in turn conveyed this land (15 Apr.1896) to Sarah, their Sister-in-law.

        • A Three-Fourths part, bequeathed to Annie Quillinan, Teresa and Margaret Sorraghan.
Sarah purchased this land from her 3 Sisters on 14 Jan.1899, for 150 pounds.

Alfred had sold these parcels of land prior to his death.
The property of 165 acres at Bylands was called Glenalbion. A Clearing Sale of Stock, Feed, Vehicles, Implements, Plant, Firewood and Household Furniture, was held on 25 Jun.1925.
The farm was disposed of prior, through Osborn & Hudson, Stock and Station Agents of Kilmore.
The buyer appears to have been Joseph Hanson.
A Hotel called Glenalbion was also on the Sydney Road at Bylands. Owned by Donald Cummings in 1858, when it was destroyed by fire.

Edward Leydon mysteriously disappeared after catching the late train home, Monday, 13 Sept.1915, from Melbourne.
A search found his jinker and horse, Tuesday morning, but it was not until Wednesday that he was found dead in a dry creek on the property of J.D Smyth, by his son and John McKendrick jun.
The spot where the body was found, was in the opposite direction to which he would have taken home.
The Coroner found Edward who had been in ill-health, got out of his jinker, went into Mr.Smyths paddock, and fell into a creek. Unable to get out, he died from exposure.
A Verdict of death by misadventure was found.

Nicholas Sorraghan, the father of Sarah, was known as the Grand Old Man of Kilmore, died 31 Dec.1889, Aged 108 years.
(not 31 Dec.1890, as on his
Headstone in the Kilmore Catholic Cemetery).
He was at the time, reportably the oldest resident in Australia.
It is said an Uncle of his lived to 111.
Born in 1771 at Shercock/ Bailieborough, Co.Cavan, Ireland to Philip Sorraghan (farmer) and Mary ODonnell, it is said he was 17 years of age, when the Irish Rebellion occurred in 1798.
After Farming in Ireland for many years, he left for America, before coming to Victoria in 1853.
Married in Ireland, 3 times, all his children (7) by his third wife (Margaret Ruxton), were born at Bylands Victoria, however there were children by his other two wifes (Rose ONEILL and Bridget OREILLY) in Victoria.
Nicholas was in fact 72 years of age when he married Margaret Ruxton.
Margaret died 4 Jul.1895, (aged 65), Bylands, daughter of William Ruxton and Johanna Duffy, and is buried in the Kilmore Catholic Cemetery.

Margaret Sorraghan (Ruxton) had a nephew & niece, Jeremiah Cassidy & Mary Ann Crossley, in Kilmore, who were brother & sister.
      Jeremiah, a butcher, died 21 Sept.1909, aged 63, Kilmore.
Mary relict of the late Thomas Crossley, a butcher, died 10 Nov.1916, aged 70, Sydney Rd.Kilmore.
She was survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Heavey & Margaret Spence.
Jeremiah & Mary were the children of Patrick Cassidy & Ann Ruxton.

Owen Sorraghan, a child of Nicholas first marriage, arrived in Victoria on 26 Nov.1841 on the Wallace which departed Liverpool 18 Aug.1841.
He was registered as an Assisted Passenger under the Surname, Sorrgan.
Owen gave his age as 18, Maritial Status as single, Occupation a Labourer, a native of Cavan, and Religion as RC.
Owens half brother, Francis followed in 1853 on the James L.Bogert which arrived Melbourne Apr.1853.
Francis was aged 21, registered as an Unassisted Passenger under the Surname, Soraghan.
Also accompaning Francis were Francis J.Soraghan (13) and Margt Soraghan (12).
All three were recorded as Irish.
A Nicholas Soraghan (21) also appears in the Index for the James L.Bogert, but i could not find Nicholas in the Ship Passenger List.
Owens three half siblings, Patk (25), Elizth (20) and Margaret (18), followed in 1854 on the Albatross which arrived Melbourne Jul.1854.
All three were registered as an Unassisted Passenger under the Surname, Sorryhan, and Irish.
Two of Owens siblings, Margt (25) and Rose (22) followed in 1855 on the Frederick which departed Liverpool 24 Jan.1855 and arrived Melbourne 11 Apr.1855.
Margaret and Rose were both assigned as Domestic Servants to John Grant of Deep Creek and John Gildea of Moonee Ponds respectively.
Both were registered as single, Assisted Passengers, and under the Surname, Soraghan.
It is feasible that Margaret (25), is in fact the wife of Nicholas, the Grand Old Man.
It is said in total there were 19 children, but only 17 could be remembered on Nicholas death certificate.

Children from Nicholas first and second marriage that also came to Victoria included:

Owen Sorraghan was a Mail Coach Proprietor, in parternship with Mr.Clarke, on the Sydney road. Owen was an active and skilful whip. Sorraghan and Clarke sold out their line of coaches to James Bevan and Co. (Mr Bevan was drowned through the foundering of the London in the Bay of Biscay).
Owen soon afterwards settled at Bald Hiils, then took considerable interest in mining at Reedy Creek and lost a good deal of money there, after which he spent time in the Ballarat district, eventually settling near Seymour. For years Owen was a martyr to rheumatism.
