Notes.
In the Newspaper notice on the birth of his daughter (1919) and the death of his wife (1926), John Douglas Gray is referred to as a Captain.
He may have been a Captain in the Merchant Navy ?
It is unknown what became of his second wife ?
In the 1936 Federal Election, John (and his wife, Rebecca) is registered as a Pilot at Gatcombe Head, which is on the Southern end of Facing Island, near Gladstone, Queensland.
Prior to WW11 John Douglas Gray is recorded as Harbour Master of Maryborough Queensland.
During WW11, J.D.Gray commanded a nightly Volunteer Coastal Patrol, which took in Hervey Bay, as it was vital for early detection of possible Japanese infiltration.
On his death, the Maryborough Newspaper stated:
J.D.Gray died suddenly (early Saturday) at his residence at Maryborough, aged 61 years, and who had been Harbour Master at Maryborough for a number of years,
husband of Georgina Rebecca Gray,
he was prominently associated with the Highland Gathering Committee some years ago, and took an active part in organising A.R.P. (Air Raid Precaution) activies during the War years,
He was a member of the Maryborough sub-branch R.S.S.A.I.L.A. (Returned Sailors, Soldiers & Airmens Imperial League of Australia, now R.S.L.).
The Melbourne Newspapers stated:
Father of Molly (Mrs.Colin Wilson) and Jean (Whangarei, New Zealand).
It is feasible that J.D.Gray was also a Harbour Master or a Water Pilot of Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne.
In the 1901 Scotland Census (taken on night 31 Mar.), John Douglas Gray is living with his parents, and three sisters at Claddagh, Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire.
There is also a visitor, Maria Farrington, Johns mothers sister.
