Notes.
Ellen Mary MORGAN, the eldest daughter of George MORGAN and Roseanne McDEVITT of Williamstown, married Thomas Andrew, the eldest son of James Andrew and Jane Jackson of Droylsden Manchester.
Ellen appears to have been 1 of 10 childen.
Thomas joined the Victorian Railways (11 Sept.1871) as a Boiler Maker at the Locomotive Workshops in North Melbourne, later transferring to the North Williamstown Workshops.
Incidently Thomas was involved in the same profession, Boilermaking, and emigrated from the same place, Manchester, as the Budd family.
Thomas can be found in the 1861 English Census. He is living with his parents at Blandford St.West, Ashton under Lyne, Manchester Lancashire.
There are no other children, however there is a Boarder, Mary Jackson, a sister of Jane ?

I could not find the parents in either the 1851 or 1871 England Census. Thomas would have most likely emigrated by the 1871 Census.
But it must be remembered, that part of the 1851 Manchester Census was water damaged, due to a flood.
At the time, Thomas Andrew parents married, 23 Dec.1855, Manchester Cathedral.
The father of Thomas (James) is aged 23 years, is resident at 31 Harding St.Manchester, and is a Hammerman.
James gives his fathers name as Thomas Andrew, and his fathers occupation as a Dresser.
The mother of Thomas (Jane) is aged 23 years, and is also resident at 31 Harding St.
She gives her fathers name as David Jackson, and her fathers occupation as a Weaver.
The Witnesses were John Hadfield and Ellen Jackson.
Thomas Andrew died from Carcinoma of the Larynx, similar to his daughter, Clarice Rose Budd (Andrew) who died of Carcinoma of the Jawbone. Genetic ?
The mother of Ellen Mary MORGAN, Roseanne McDEVITT emigrated as an Assisted passenger from Derry, Northern Ireland,
on the Tornado which departed Glasgow (14 Apr.1855) and arrived Hobsons Bay, Williamstown (15 Jul.1855).
She was accompanied by her Sister and 4 Cousins, in total 3 Sets of Sisters.
The 2 McGonnigal Sisters with Rosanne McDevitt and Roseanne McLaughlin went to their Aunts (Mrs.Armstrong) of Douglas Pde. Williamstown.
Sarah McDevitt and Margaret McLaughlin went elsewhere to work as Servants, for Mr.McNab of Broadmeadows (3 months @ 17 pounds) and for Mr.Huhul of Diamond Creek (6 months @ 20 pounds) resp.
All six were recorded as Roman Catholic, all being able to read, and all disembarked with rations.
Only the McDevitt sisters and Roseanne McLaughlin could write.

- Roseanne McDevitt married (1857) George Morgan (Water Policeman).
- Sarah McDevitt married (1856) Joseph Barr (Bricklayer).
- Margaret McLaughlin married (1857) John Quillinan.
- Roseanne Catherine McLaughlin married (2 Feb.1867) William Ryan (Policeman).
- Bridget McGonnigal married (1858) John Hunt.
- Mary McGonnigal married (1856) Philip Lynch.
Roseanne McLaughlin was the Eldest Daughter of Patrick McLaughlin, the Harbour Master of Derry.
How were the 6 cousins related ?
The parents of Roseanne and Sarah were Daniel McDEVITT and Ellen McGONNIGAL.
The parents of Roseanne and Margaret McLAUGHLIN were Patrick McLAUGHLIN and Roseanne McDEVITT.
The parents of Bridget and Mary McGONNIGAL were Hugh McGONNIGAL and Margaret FARRAN.
Who was the Aunt, Mrs.Armstrong of Williamstown ?
Her Christian Name appears to have be Margaret and her death was registered at Snapper Point in 1881, on the Mornington Peninsula.
On her death her Age was given as 57, and Parents as David McGONNIGAL and Ann HUNTER.
There appears to have been another Aunt in Victoria (a younger sister of Margaret Armstrong), Annie McGONNIGAL, who married (1864) William Henry HUNTER in Victoria.
William Henry HUNTER was a Saddler of Bourke Street, in the CBD of Melbourne and was born at Rothbury, Northumberland England.
William and Annie resided at Coquet Dale Villa, 37 Inglesby Road, Camberwell.
They died 14 Apr.1906 (Aged 75) and 4 Nov.1922 (Aged 80) respectively. Both are buried at Boroondara Cemetery, Kew and there appears to have been no children.
The Father of Ellen Mary MORGAN, George MORGAN joined the Victorian Water Police as a Constable on 1st. Oct.1856.
He was described as 5 feet 7 inches in height, having blue eyes and brown hair, and Catholic in Religion.
Prior to joining the Water Police, George was a Seaman.
His first Commission was on the Government Steamer Victoria, an Armed Steam Sloop.
On the 18th.Jan.1859, the men on board that vessel were transferred to the Police Authorities care.
The Victoria remained under these conditions till Mar.1860, when she reverted to the
Public Works Department, and George Morgan was permanently transferred to the Williamstown Water Police.
In Dec.1876, the Water Police obtained their First Land Quarters, a Bluestone House on the corner of Ann St.& Nelson Place, Williamstown.
They had previously been quartered on floating vessels, so men would always be on hand in an emergency.
George retained his Membership of the Force until 10th.Aug.1887, retiring thru ill-health,
on a yearly pension of 117 pound, 1 shilling and 6 pence, after 31 years, of which 5 he held the rank of Senior-Constable.
He was noted for his bull-like courage, from the fact he was a small man,
he was frequently called upon to engage in the arrest of men, much stronger and heavier than himself.
He was described by his comrades as being unflinching and true as steel.
In 1872 he was rewarded 2 pounds for rescuing a drowning girl and in 1884 commended for services in the apprehension of John Henderson, convicted for Indecent Assault.
George died shortly after retiring of Cancer of the Liver.
Like his Uncle (Thomas Andrew), Louis Albert Morgan joined the Victorian Railways on 19 Feb.1889 as an Apprentice in the Locomotive Division.
The brother of Louis, John Joseph Morgan, also joined the Vic. Railways on 10 Jan.1887 as a Block Boy and graduated to Junior Signalman/ Porter on 15 May 1891.
Also buried with Annie Emma MORGAN (CARR), wife of Louis, at Fawkner is her Brother-in-law, Joseph KNIPLER (d.abt.25 Aug.1924 Aged 62, m.Mary CARR).
Mary Monica MORGAN (daug.of Louis) is buried at Fawkner with her Brother-in-law, John Joseph McDonald.
Albert Joseph MORGAN (son of Louis) is buried at Fawkner with his Brother-in-law, Julian Frederick GRELLET, and his sister, Beatrice Rose GRELLET (Morgan).
Addendum.
- Two of the Executors in Will of George Morgan, were his sister, Mary Feran, Twyford St.Williamstown, and Thomas Andrew, Cecil St.Williamstown.
In the Will of Luke Feran, Water Policeman, Twyford St.Williamstown, husband of Mary, the following children were benefactors:
- Mary Gerring, Melbourne Rd.Williamstown, wife of John Gerring, Watchman.
- Catherine Elizabeth Hopkins, Contenment St.Fremantle, wife of Isaac Hopkins, Plasterer.
- William Feran, Melbourne Rd.Williamstown, Colony Ship Foreman.
- Rosanna Huddlestone, Hope St.West Geelong, wife of Herbert Huddlestone, Plasterer.
- Margaret Feran, Spinster, Nelson Place, Williamstown.
- Luke Feran, 53 Osborne St.Williamstown, Seaman.
An Executor was John Morgan, Baker, Ferguson St.Williamstown.
- Thomas Andrew appears to have been related to a Taylor Horsfield, who established an Iron Foundry in Bendigo, maybe thru his father, James Andrew.
- The McDevitts, or McLaughlins, or McGongiles (probably all 3) appear to have been related to a Butler family, who were in South Africa at some stage.
A Mr.Butler from South Africa attended the wedding of his neice, Eva Beagley, only daughter of Mr.C.Beagley, of Nelson St. Williamstown Melbourne.
Eva married Mr.Chas Roberts of Laverton Melbourne.
- Roseanne and Sarah McDevitte appear to have left a brother in Derry, Michael (McDevette), who went into his fathers business (Unknown), who was in partnership with an Unionist, Donnell.
It is said, a rarity in those days, a partnership between a Catholic and a Protestant.
In the 1901 Irish Census, a Michael McDevitt, his wife, Ellen, and six children, are resident at 5 Elrington Terrace, Waterside Londonderry.
There are also two Servants, both unmarried.
