Notes.
Elizabeth Budd the third daughter of William Hartley Budd and Rebecca Sutton of Wallan, married
John McNaughton, the fourth son of Thomas McNaughton and Agnes Drain of Southend Scotland, at 6.00 pm.
in the same Church in which her younger sister, Mary Hannah was to marry Walter Bowles Newing, 9 to 10 weeks later.
John appears to have been 1 of 12 children.
After the service the bridal party returned to the brides residence Strangeways for a sumptuous feast.
In the midst of the celebrations, the usual sound was breached by the tradition of kettling which involved the banging of tin kettles.
Later the couple took the night train to Melbourne.
It has yet to be determined when John McNaughton came to Australia. It is said he may have emigrated via New Zealand.
However in the 1861 Scotland Census (taken on night 7/8 Apr.), John McNaughton, is living with his parents, Thomas and Agnes (Nanie), and five siblings at North Carrin, Parish of Southend, Argyleshire.
Johns father, Thomas McNaughton, is recorded as a Farmer of 250 Acres employing 1 man (George Brown).
There is also his fathers widowed sister, Agnes Campbell, and his mothers widowed mother, Janet Drain.
Two Grandsons of Thomas and Agnes are recorded, Neill McKinlay and Thomas McKay, and a visitor, Mary Futton.
Campbelton appears to be Campbeltown.

I was unable to verify the accuracy of the above Census data, as original images of the two Censuses were unavailable, only transcripts.
In 1888 John McNaughton was butchering with his nephew, Thomas McKendrick at Wallan.
His elder sister, Agnes McNaughton married John McKendrick, 2 Dec.1862, Southend.
The McKendricks sailed from Liverpool 16 sept.1863 to Australia, as Assisted Passengers with their infant son, Thomas McKendrick, on the Gresham arriving 11 Dec.1863 Melbourne.
John McKendrick was recorded as a Ploughman by occupation.
Five more McKendrick children were born to Agnes and John, in the Mordialloc/ Cheltenham area of Melbourne.
John McNaughton ran a Slaughter House and Butcher Shop with Thomas McKendrick at Wallan and Kilmore respectively.
Elizabeth Budd had inherited 114 Acres of land from her father in 1888. Located on the Southwest portion of the Strangeways Estate it was bounded on the South by the Darraweit Rd.
and on the Eastside by the present Milne Court.
She bequeathed this land to her son, John William McNaughton.
Elizabeth and John lived in a Weatherboard house located on the Eastern Boundary of this land.
After the death of her husband, Elizabeth lived with her 2 sisters (Rosetta Budd and Mary Hannah Newing) in a Dwelling on the Southeast cnr. of the Kilmore Rd. and William St.
Late in her life, Elizabeth suffered from blindness. She appears to have been the tallest of her sisters.
Mary Hannah Newing bequeathed the land she owned to her nephew, John William McNaughton.
This consisted mainly of 2 parcels:
- 147 Acres inherited from her father (Crown Grant dated 17 Apr.1856) which was opposite the Eastern Boundary of the Strangeways Estate
and was located on the Northeast cnr. of the Kilmore Road and William St.on which stood an old dwelling and a bakehouse.
25 Acres of this land was leased to the baker, Nicholas Jongebload.
The Dwelling was the house William Hartley Budd snr. built sometime after he built the Strangeways Hotel opposite.
Beryl Stewart, a Grand daughter of Elizabeth lives on a portion of this land.
- 59 Acres inherited from her sister, Rosetta Budd on her death in 1934. Located on the Northwest cnr. of the Kilmore and Darraweit Roads. On this once stood the Strangeways Hotel.
Rosetta had inherited this land from her father, it being part of the Strangeways Estate.
This land is bounded on the Westside by the present Milne Court.
