      Notes

      William Calvin HALE arrived Hobsons Bay Victoria, 29 Jun.1858 on the Glimpse, departing San Francisco 14 Apr.1858, via Sydney.
      There appears to have been no other Relative on board and none in Australia.
      When married to Emma Jane Budd, the eldest daughter of William Hartley Budd and Rebecca Sutton, he was a Draper at Pyalong near Kilmore.
      It is unknown whether he owned his own Business or was an Employee.
      The two witnesses (Adamsons) at the Marriage, were Siblings (b. Liverpool).
      The Couple went to Ballarat to live, a thriving Gold Mining town, where William appears to have entered the Timber trade.
      A 1875 directory shows William, a Timber Merchant of Fawkner St.
      On the 11 Sept.1876, William joined the Department of Lands and Survey in the Adminstrative Section.
      Circa 1879, the family moved to Ararat,
      A 1880/81 directory shows William, as a Crown Lands Balliff of Commissioners Hill, Ararat.
      Transferred to Hamilton in 1893, and finally moving to Blackburn Melbourne, circa 1901.
      (A Balliff was responsible for inspecting and reporting on selections, preventing illegal occupation of Crown Lands and taking proceedings agains trespassers).
      After Williams death, Emma Jane moved to 6 Normanby St. Windsor and later to East Malvern.

      The two HALE children who died as infants, Elizabeth and John, are buried with members of a family called BARBERY in the Baptist and Congregational section of the Old Ballarat Cemetery.
      This grave virtually butts onto the Rusden Grave in the next row, which contains Arthur Spence Rusden and his second wife, Sarah Edith Rusden (nee Hale), sister of the two infants.
      The Barbery family appear to have come from Ladock, Cornwall England.
      No known relationship is known with the Hale family.

      Albert HALE died at the young age of 28 years, of Influenza and Pneumonia, while a Resident Master at University High School, Grattan St. Carlton.
      He was a Teacher of exceptional ability, having distinguished himself as a Mathematician at Melbourne University.
      A former Principal of Harvard College Stawell, he held many excellent Testimonials from leading Melbourne Educational Insitutions.
      Only the week before his death, he had sat for and been successful in obtaining his Degree of Bachelor of Arts.
      Albert may have inherited some of his traits from his mother, who was described as being very Methodical and Meticulus.
      He died Interstate, his Estate was granted to his wife.
      (Sarah was living at Montrose, near Croydon, when her husband died).
      His young wife, Sarah Josephine never remarried and bequeathed her Residence at 2 Talbot Ave.and Personal Property to her brother, Arthur Richard Holmes, a School Teacher of 4 Dalgety St. Oakleigh.
      She died in Mont Park Lunacy Hospital, kew, of Cadio Vascular Degeneration.

      Florence Elizabeth HALE married late in life a Widower, Rev.James Henerson MITCHELL.
      James Mitchell was born at Leith Scotland in 1854, and studied for the Ministry at Edinburgh University.
      In 1877 he came to Australia and the following year was called to the Congregational Church at Castlemaine Victoria.
      Subsquent callings were at and North Shore, Sydney, and Williamstown Victoria.
      In 1891 he joined the Presbyterian Church of Tasmania at Beaconfield, and later in Victoria at Smeaton, Mount Prospect, Meredith and Birregurra.
      James bequeathed his Personal Estate to Florence in a Will, dated 13 Jan.1928, executed at Mansfield.
      He owned no Real Estate at the time of his death.
      Florence bequeathed her Real Estate (287 Union Rd.Surrey Hills) and Personal Property to her brother, William Vernon Hale, step-daughter, Marjorie Barnett of 8 Middlesex Rd.Surrey Hills, and Emily Ada Clisby of 96 Robinson Rd.Hawthorn.
      After James death Elizabeth Hillson (d.30 Aug.1940) lived with Florence and after Elizabeths death, Florences brother, William.

      Sarah Edith HALE married Arthur Spence Rusden, the Manager of the Commercial Bank in Nhill, in the same Church (St.James) her mother was baptised in, and her Grandfather (William Hartley Budd) was married in.
      Sarah was the Principal of a Primary School, which was conducted at the Empire Hall (East Melbourne ?).
      Arthur had only be widowed the previous month, his first wife Blanche dying in Nhill.
      He joined the Commercial Bank as a Junior Clerk at their Head Office in Melbourne in 1881.
      Subsquent appointments were at St.Kilda, Carlton, Prahan, Newport, Footscray, Rupanyup (6 yrs.), Nhill (9 yrs.) and Ballarat in 1912.
      From Junior Clerk to Ledger Keeper, to Accountant, to Agent, to Inspectors Dept. to Relieving Mgr.and finally Manager.
      He was an eager member of many Committees which included the Ballarat Progress Association and the Ballarat Hospital.
      Gazetted as a Justice of the Peace in 1906, Arthur was the Grandson of the Rev.George Keylock Rusden (first Anglican Rector of Maitland, NSW), and nephew of George William Rusden (Historian, Educationist, Clerk of the Victorian Parliament, and Beneficial).
      It is said that Sarah died of Cancer.
      The Rusden family came from Leith, Surrey England to Hobart in 1834, then to Sydney and Maitland in the Hunter Valley.

      Mabel (Mabelle, Maybelle) HALE married(1) Walter George Allen, the eldest son of Louis George and Isabella Allen of St.Kilda.
      Walter was a Cripple (no use in his legs) and he use to pull himself around by sitting on the floor.
      It is said he got a germ of some sort, that created the leg problem in his early days, when working for Nicholas Apro in Chadstone.
      A 1922 directory shows the couple resident at 41 Zetland Rd.Surrey Hills.
      They moved to Mitcham and had a Pharmacy at 704 Whitehorse Rd.which was sold to the Wellingtons shortly before Walters death.
      I believe the Chemist Shop is still there.
      Walter is buried with his parents and sister (Sylvia) at Kew, which has an unique momument, consisting of a Stone Cairn and Wooden Cross.
      Also on the Inscription is Frederick Charles Allens name, Walters Brother, who was in the Boer War (Steinachers Horse) and died 6 Feb.1902 at Barberton, South Africa of Enteric Fever.
      After Walters death Mabel remarried Albert Schaeffer, who in turn after Mabels death, married her sister, Amy Louise Hale.

      A 1912 directory shows a Miss Louise HALE as a Piano Harmony Teacher of 92 Lewisham Rd. Hawthorn.

      Frederick HALE joined the Victorian Police Force on 9 Jan.1900 as a Foot Constable at Head Office, Russell St.Melb.
      He was described as Fair in Complexion, Eyes Blue, Hair Fair, 6 Ft.1 inch in Height, !4 st.12 lbs.in Weight, and Presbyterian by Religion.
      Frederick gives his previous Occupation as a Saleman.
      Subsequent appointments were at Nagambie, Benalla, West Melb., Brighton, Wanalta near Rushworth, Kennington, Sale, South Melb. and finally back to Russell St.
      He was generally described as well conducted, most efficient, reliable and trustworthy, and was quickly promoted through the ranks.
      However early in his career while stationed at Brighton he was found guilty on a charge of Misconduct (1 May 1906) of being off the beat and aslept in an unoccupied building at 3.45 am, by his Sub-Officer, and refused to come out when ordered.
      Fined 10 shillings he was transferred to Russell St. where he would be under closer supervision.
      While at Sale in charge of the Superintendents Office, Frederick divorced his wife, Florence on 31 Aug.1921.
      He remarried Joyce Ethel Newbould on 10 Sept.1921 at the Sale Presbyterian? Manse.
      Joyce was a Deserted wife, her Husband, Rupert, walked out and was never seen again by Joyce, although the only child, Bernice, believes she saw her father years later in a lift in Myers Department Store, in central Melbourne.
      Fredericks first wife, Florence, never remarried and died in Aradale lunacy Hospital, Ararat of Cardio Vascular Degeneration.

      Marian Rebecca HALE was the only Sibling that never Married, although of all the Siblings, only William Vernon HALE had descendants.
      She bequeathed her Real Estate and Personal Property to her sister, Amy Louise.
      Her Real Estate consisted of a vacant block of land in Maxwell St.Glen Iris and her residence at 2 Gillman St.East Malvern, where she appears to have lived with her mother for many years.
