A Calender is a machine that adds a satin finish to ribbon or tape. The operator (calenderer) would have have detected and straightened, tangled or twisted fabric, entering the machine.
May have also dampened the fabric by spraying a fine water mist, as it entered the machine.
It appears John may have been a Paper Waste Dealer, as Charles Lawson, was a Commercial Traveller (Paper Waste).
In the 1861 England Census (taken on night 7 Apr.), John, his parents, and three sisters are resident at Mount Pleasant Private, Middleton.
