      Notes.

HARRIET McCARTHY (1789 - 1860) was born at Sydney Cove and baptised, on Sunday, 1 Mar.1789, as Harriot BEADSLEY, most likely in the presence of his Excellency, Governor Arthur Phillip.
Her parents JOHN McCARTHY (a Marine) and ANN BEARDSLEY (a Convict), arrived at Port Jackson with the FIRST FLEET (26 Jan.1788).
The First Fleet comprised of 11 ships and 1,034 persons (756 Convicts).
First landing in Australia at Botany Bay between the 18th.and the 20th.Jan.1788, New South Wales.
This site was discovered (29 Apr.1770) by Captain Cook and recommended by him, but was found unsuitable.
A more suitable site was found just north at Port Jackson and named Sydney Cove.
The date of this landing was 26 Jan.1788 and is commemorated as Australia Day.

JOHN DEVEREUX was born circa 1777 at Shelbaggan, Co.Wexford in the South East of Ireland (near Ramsgrange, Parish of Rathroe) to a family of Wealthy Landowners.
The house where the family lived still stands and is occupied by a Mrs.CROSBY.
As a Captain in a Yeoman Battalion, he was charged with Treason for aiding and assisting in the 1798 Irish Rebellion at Vinegar Hill in Wexford, against English Rule.
It was alleged, he was part of a group that locked English sympathisers in a Barn, and then after setting fire to the Barn, waited for any of those that escaped with Pitch forks and Scythes.
This was probably the dreadful massacre at Scullabogue, near New Ross, 5 Jun.1798, that resulted in the death of upwards of 100 prisoners and their families.
After a much publicised trial at Cork (27 Nov.1799-9 Jan.1800) he was sentenced to Hang, but instead transported for Life.
His father (also John Devereux) petitioned the Government in Dublin, on two occassions (21 Jun. & 28 Jul.1800), requesting mitigation of the sentence, stating he was blind and had a wife and four daughters to maintain, and they depended on the support of their son.
Departing from Cork (30 May 1802), John arrived in Sydney (30 Oct.1802) on the Atlas 2.
He was recorded on the Altas 2, as Jno Devneaun, aged 27, trialed Cork, and transported for Life.
The Atlas 2 carried 188 male prisoners and had the rarity of no loss of life during its voyage.
He is recorded as arriving at Norfolk Island, 23 June 1804. The Lady Nelson arrived on this date.
John probably was involved in the Irish Uprising (4/5 Mar.1804) at Castle Hill, north of Parramatta, and despatched to N.I. where it was considered there was less chance of doing any harm and NO chance of escape.
This is where John Devereux met his future wife, Harriet McCarthy.
Harriet as an infant, had accompanied her mother (Ann Beardsley) to N.I. in 1790.
On the Conclusion of the Settlement at N.I. Harriet now pregnant, departed N.I.(25 Dec.1807) on the Porpoise bound for the Derwent River, Tasmania, arriving 17 Jan.1808.
John followed on the Estramina, departing N.I. (15 May 1808) arriving Derwent River (5 June 1808).
Eight days later, on the 13 June 1808, the couple was married by the Rev.Robert Knopwood at St.Davids Church of England, Hobart.
A baby daughter, also called Harriet was born in August.
Seven more children were born to the couple, all in Tasmania.
John came to Tasmania as a free man, being given a Conditional Pardon, on the condition he never return to Ireland.
He was granted 65 acres of land at Herdsmans Cove near Green Point, Bridgewater in the Derwent Valley, embracing the present town of Bridgewater and the Green Point Estate.
A Devereux house still stands on the corner of Cobbs Hill Rd.and Sorrell St.Bridgewater.
It appears John forfeited the farm at Green Point, however the circumstances are unknown.
Circa 1828 the family moved to Black Brush, a few miles south of Green Ponds (Kempton) on the Northern Hobart-Launceston Road.
In the Hobart Town Courier, 28 Jun.1828, there is an Advertisement from the Sheriffs office, stating that, in the case of Hodgson versus Devereux, the farm at Green Point will be auctioned off.
On 19 June 1832 their house and land at Black Brush was sold for 600 pounds.
No trace could be found of the death of John Devereux.
His wife, Harriet appears to have remarried twice.

WILLIAM CAMPBELL, the second husband of Harriet McCarthy, late of Black Brush, bequeathed his estate to his brother, Peter Campbell, and his three sisters, Mary, Susan & Elizabeth Campbell, all of Armagh Ireland.
The two Executors were Hamilton Gerrard, Farmer of Brighton, and Henry Shripp, Postmaster of Brighton.

WILLIAM MULLIGAN, the third husband of Harriet McCarthy, was tried in County Down, Ireland, on 8 March 1847 for larcency, for stealing a piece of linen from a John Lindsay, and was sentenced for 7 years.
At the time of the trial he was recorded as a Weaver, 40 years old, a Widower with four children, and Church of England.
Transported as a convict to Tasmania, William departed Dublin on 20 Sept.1848, on the Pestonjee Bomanjee, arriving 2 Jan.1849.
On arrival he was recorded as 41 years old, 5 ft.3 & 3/4 inches in height, dark complexion and black hair, and able to read a little.
His native place was recorded as St.Patrick, Co.Down.
As a convict, William had to obtain permission to marry Harriet (Campbell).
Both were recorded as residing at Brighton, when they married.
William was granted his Certificate of Freedom on 1 Apr.1854.
William died after a long and painful illness, aged 82 yrs. and was resident at North Bridgewater (Hobart Mercury, 15 Mar.1887).
It is unknown if William ever saw his four children again, he left in Ireland. Were they adopted by relatives or put into a Workhouse ?

No trace can be found of Anns two older Brothers, Alexander and Charles.

Variations in the Spelling of DEVEREUX include, DEVERALL, DEVERAUX, DEVEREAUX, DEVEREUSE, DEVEREW, DEVERICKS, DEVERIEUX, DEVEROUX, DEVERUX etc.
      The correct spelling is DEVREUX.
The Devereuxs originally came from the town of EVREUX, midway betwen Paris and the Channel.
The DE was added, meaning OF.

      Addendum.

      1. Three sisters of John Devereux are known - Miranda, Jane & Nancy (Ann).
Miranda died 2 Jan.1851 (aged 84 yrs.) at Arthurstown Co.Wexford, the last of the Devereuxes of Sheelbaggon House.
At the trial, a sister, Mary, appeared as a witness, and referred to her other two sisters ?

      2. The second door of the Devereux House at Bridgewater, indicates at some stage the house was extended. Apparently this is an Irish tradition.
The original house is on the right of the photo and dates from circa 1817.
Previous to this house the Devereuxes lived in a stone cottage at Bridgewater, demolished to make way for the Midland Highway.
I visited the house in March 2009 and it was being renovated.

      3. It is said that John Devereux died in New York, USA, visiting some Devereux cousins, while enroute to Ireland.
It may have been John that accompainied his youngest daughter, Ann, and her husband, William Hartley Budd, to Melbourne, Victoria, in Nov.1838.
Although the Devereuxes were wealthy land owners in Ireland, John was never a farmer, and would have been bored by life in Tasmania. As he was getting on in years, he would have been eager to return to Ireland.

      4. In the obituary of Johns son, Philip Devereux (8 Jun.1910, Huon Times) it stated that John Devereux was an associate of Michael Dwyer, Wicklow Chief.

      5. John Devereux was lucky not to be executed. He was successful in having his trial heard as a civil case, employing an excellent Civilian Lawyer, and a distinguished referee, General Sir William Fawcett.
A Walter Devereux was Court Martialled for also participating in the massacre at Scullabogue, with the same witnesses employed against him, as in Johns case, but was speedily executed.
It appears the two Devereuxes were not related ?

      6. At the trial is was said that John Devereuxs father, John sen., was 70 years of age.
      7. Also John, when questioned, said that there were no Devereux relatives in Ireland, beyond his immediate family, and only one in England.
Two relatives appeared at the trial:

        1. Bridget Riley (Reily), who was a first cousin. Bridgets father was Charles.
        2. Thomas Chapman (of Houseland), whose wife, was also a first cousin.

      8. In 1844 Harriet Devereux was a housekeeper at the residence of James Campbell at Black Brush, when on the night of the 14 Feb.two armed man, George Jones and James Platt, entered the house demanding money.
When none was found, Harriet was tied up, and burnt on the legs with a shovel that had been placed in the fire, so severely to raise blisters.
Money was subsequently found, and the two men escaped, only to be apprehended later and trialled.
        Ref. The Courier, 19 Apr.1844, p.3.
Harriet was to marry a William Campbell in 1847.

      9. At the time Harriet Devereux married Patrick McCabe (1830), both are recorded on the marriage certificate as resident at Bagdad.
When Harriet remarried George Morton (1849), George is recorded as a Tailor.
On his death George was also recorded as a Tailor, aged 74 years, birthplace given as England, and cause of death was Apoplexy (a Stroke).

      10. At the time Mary Ann Devereux married Thomas Willets (1832), both are recorded on the marriage certificate as resident at Broad Marsh.

      11. The christian names of the two brothers, Peter and Philip, were entered in the Church Baptismal Register in Latin, by the Officiating Minister as Petrus and Phillipus respectively.
        ie:

      12. Peter Devereuxs funeral departed from the Epsom Hotel, Brighton. (16 Jul.1886, Hobart Mercury). Like many death notice of the time, it did not state where the funeral was destined for.
It has been discovered that Peter was buried at Brighton Plains Cemetery, and at some later date, the headstone (with several others) was removed to St.Marks, Pontville.
However it appears his remains were never exhumed and removed.

      13. Daniel ORourke and his first wife, Catherine (Dunn), arrived in Tasmania on board the ship, Strathfieldsaye, on 24 Jan.1833, with two children, James(3) and Margaret (2).
Catherine died in childbirth, 2 Nov.1842, aged 33 years, Hobart, giving birth to a son, Daniel, who survived, named after her husband.
It was Daniels and Catherines daughter, Christina, that married the brother of Daniels second wife.

      14. Mary Ann Devereux died at Macquarie St. Hobart, aged 50 years, a farmers wife and birthplace given as Brighton. Cause of death was Chronic Bronchritis and Pneumonia.

      15. Patrick McCabe is buried with his sister, Catherine Horner (d.7 Jul.1864, aged 56) and her husband, Francis Horner (d.12 Mar.1872, aged 73) at St.Marys RC Church at Hobart.
Patrick died of Natural Causes, aged 49 years.
He was tried (Mar.1817) in Ireland for Highway Robbery and sentenced to 14 years, departing England (22 Dec.1817) on the Minerva, arriving in Tasmania, 7 Jun.1818.

      16. On his death, Philip Devereuxs estate was estimated to be worth approx.twenty thousand pounds, a considerable sum in 1910.
When he died a Tasmanian paper stated that more than thirty years ago a relative who died in Sydney leaving a considerable estate, a large proportion of which he became entitled to.
The relative in Sydney, appears to be Philips mothers sister, Mary Ann Critchley, who died (18 May 1879, a widow) Intestate, at Darling Point, Sydney.
