Notes.

Some of the above dates were taken from a Bible presented by Hannah Yates(nee Hartley), to her son Thomas on his 21st. Birthday in 1878.

At the time Hannah HARTLEY married Thomas YATES (1845), Hannah is resident at 26 Hardman St.Manchester.
Hannah gives her fathers name as John HARTLEY, and his occupation as a Boiler Maker.
Thomas is resident at 16 Pitt St. Manchester and is a Boiler Maker.
Thomas gives his fathers name as John YATES, and his fathers occupation as a Boiler Maker.
Thomas fathers occupation is erroneous, as his father was a Policeman.

In the 1850 Slater Directory of Manchester & Salford, a John Yates, a Policeman, is resident at 16 Pitt St. Baird St.

In the 1851 England Census (taken on night 30 Mar.), Thomas parents and five sisters are resident at 15 Pitt St. Ancoats Manchester.

I could not find Hannah Yates (Hartley) and family in the 1851 England Census.
But it must be remembered, that part of the 1851 Manchester Census was water damaged, due to a flood.

In the 1841 England Census (taken on night 6 Jun.), Thomas Yates, is living with his parents, and five sisters at Loom St. Ancoats Manchester.
A John YATES married 31 Jul.1820, Elizabeth HOPWOOD, St.Peters Church, Bolton Le Moors.

In the 1861 England Census (taken on night 2 Apr.), Thomas three youngest sisters are resident at 6 Chesterfield St. Manchester.
All three are Unmarried.

In the 1856 letter from John Budd in Manchester to his brother, William Hartley Budd in Australia, John writes:

My daughter Hannah is Married and has been about 11 years she has 3 Children and has buried 2 and she will have another soon and they are all in good health. Her Husband Thomas Yates is a Boiler Maker and he went out to the Indies on board a steam Ship about 3 months since he is engaged for the Voyage at £5.10.0 per Month and Rations.

In the 1861 England Census, Thomas and Hannah Yates, and four children, are resident at 25 Back Cresent, Manchester.

In the 1871 England Census, (taken on night 2 Apr.), Hannah Yates is widowed, and her three youngest children, are resident at 2 New Rd. Todmorden and Walsden.
All three children are unmarried.

In the 1871 England Census, John Yates is unmarried, and residence with John and Jane Perry, at Harrison St. Halewood Lancashire.
There are also six Perry children, and another boarder, George Vost, who is unmarried.

In the 1891 England Census, (taken on night 5 Apr.), no record of the brothers, John and Thomas Yates, could be found.

In the 1901 England Census, (taken on night 31 Mar.), Thomas Yates is unmarried, and boarding at the residence of John and Emily Cooper, at 46 Lower Fevenham St. Middlesbrough Yorkshire.
There is also a niece of the Coopers, Alice Cooper, and another Boarder, Walter Grasper, who is unmarried.

In the 1911 England Census, (taken on night 2 Apr.), Thomas Yates is unmarried, and boarding at the residence of Samuel and Margarite Hughes, at Excelsior Cottages, Queensferry, Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales.
Margarite states she has been married 10 years, and has had two children.

What became of the daughters of John YATES and Elizabeth HOPWOOD:

She gives her fathers name as John YATES, and his occupation as a Policeman.
Thomas is aged 21 years, and is a Spinner.
He gives his fathers name as William JOHNSON, and his fathers occupation as a Spinner.
Both Sarah and Thomas, were resident at 33 Pitt St.
Witnesses were John JOHNSON and Rachel YATES (sister).

In the 1871 England Census, Sarah Johnson (sister of Thomas Yates), widowed, and her three children, are resident at 4 Faulkner Square, Manchester.

At the time Rachel YATES married James SMITH (1857).
Rachel gives her fathers name as John YATES, and his occupation as a Policeman.
James is a Mechanic and is resident at Alice Terrace.
He gives his fathers name as William SMITH, and his fathers occupation as a Warehouseman.
Both Rachel and James, signed the register, and were of full age.
Witnesses were John WILD and Elizabeth YATES (sister).

In the 1871 England Census, Rachel Smith (sister of Thomas Yates), her husband, James, and her three children, are resident at 6 Foster St. Ardwick Manchester.

At the time Alice YATES married Edward HARRISON (1866), Alice is aged 25 years, and is resident at Portugal St.
She gives her fathers name as John YATES, and his occupation as a Policeman.
Edward is aged 24 years, is a Spindle Maker, and is resident at Hazel or Hagel St..
He gives his fathers name as Henry HARRISON, and his fathers occupation as a Maker Up.
Both Alice and Edward, signed the register.
Witnesses were Edward JONES and Mary JONES.
An Edward JONES married 19 Jun.1842, Mary HARRISON, Manchester Cathedral.

In the 1881 England Census, Alice Harrison (sister of Thomas Yates), her husband, Edward, and her two children, are resident at 73 Tame Valley, Dunkinfield.

The six daughters of John YATES & Elizabeth HOPWOOD, were all baptised at Manchester Cathedral:

Thomas YATES is buried in an unmarked grave no.625 with 3 other people, Cause of death on 8 Aug.1869 is Phthisis 2 years certified (ie pulmonary consumption) and was registered by Alice SLATER, present at the death.
The church record states:

1. Thomas YATES, Boilermaker, d.8 Aug.1869, Walsden, aged 47, son of John Yates of Manchester.
   
2. Margaret PALSET, Weaver, d.7 Feb.1868, Walsden, aged 43.
   
3. Han.STANSFIELD, d.23 Nov.1869, Erringden, aged 6.
   
4. James TAYLOR, d.12 Mar.1882, Walsden, aged 77, son of John TAYLOR of Walsden.

According to the Watch Committee Book held at Manchester Library and transcribed by the Police Museum:
John Yates lived at Loom St/Bengal St.in 1843 and at 15 Pitt St.in 1851.
He joined as a watchman in 1830 and on 1 Oct. 1842 joined the new borough police in C Division based in Fairfield St. His Collar number was C67.
On 9 Oct.1845 he was promoted to Merit class with 2 shillings per week extra pay.
On 29 Oct.1857 a gratuity of £50 was paid to his family, in consideration of good service.
John Yates was based in the Ardwick area where he lived.

At the time John YATES married Betty HOPWOOD (1820), John gives his occupation as a Weaver.
Both state they were of St.Peters Parish. (Ref:OLPC).
