Some of the above dates were taken from a Bible presented by Hannah Yates(nee Hartley), to her son Thomas on his 21st. Birthday in 1878.
At the time Hannah HARTLEY married Thomas YATES (1845), Hannah is resident at 26 Hardman St.Manchester.
Hannah gives her fathers name as John HARTLEY, and his occupation as a Boiler Maker.
Thomas is resident at 16 Pitt St. Manchester and is a Boiler Maker.
Thomas gives his fathers name as John YATES, and his fathers occupation as a Boiler Maker.
Thomas fathers occupation is erroneous, as his father was a Policeman.
In the 1850 Slater Directory of Manchester & Salford, a John Yates, a Policeman, is resident at 16 Pitt St. Baird St.
In the 1851 England Census (taken on night 30 Mar.), Thomas parents and five sisters are resident at 15 Pitt St. Ancoats Manchester.

I could not find Hannah Yates (Hartley) and family in the 1851 England Census.
But it must be remembered, that part of the 1851 Manchester Census was water damaged, due to a flood.
In the 1841 England Census (taken on night 6 Jun.), Thomas Yates, is living with his parents, and five sisters at Loom St. Ancoats Manchester.
A John YATES married 31 Jul.1820, Elizabeth HOPWOOD, St.Peters Church, Bolton Le Moors.

In the 1856 letter from John Budd in Manchester to his brother, William Hartley Budd in Australia, John writes:
My daughter Hannah is Married and has been about 11 years she has 3 Children and has buried 2 and she will have another soon and they are all in good health.
Her Husband Thomas Yates is a Boiler Maker and he went out to the Indies on board a steam Ship about 3 months since he is engaged for the Voyage at £5.10.0 per Month and Rations.
In the 1861 England Census, Thomas and Hannah Yates, and four children, are resident at 25 Back Cresent, Manchester.

The six daughters of John YATES & Elizabeth HOPWOOD, were all baptised at Manchester Cathedral:
- Sarah YATES bapt.5 Oct.1828, fathers occupation, a Weaver.
- Mary YATES bapt.21 Mar.1830, fathers occupation, a Weaver.
- Rachel YATES bapt.29 Jun.1834, fathers occupation, a Watchman.
- Elizabeth YATES bapt.14 May 1837, fathers occupation, a Watchman.
- Alice YATES bapt.18 Dec.1839, fathers occupation, a Policeman.
- Hannah YATES bapt.14 Jun.1843, fathers occupation, a Policeman.
Thomas YATES is buried in an unmarked grave no.625 with 3 other people, Cause of death on 8 Aug.1869 is Phthisis 2 years certified (ie pulmonary consumption) and was registered by Alice SLATER, present at the death.
The church record states:
- Thomas YATES, Boilermaker, d.8 Aug.1869, Walsden, aged 47, son of John Yates of Manchester.
- Margaret PALSET, Weaver, d.7 Feb.1868, Walsden, aged 43.
- Han.STANSFIELD, d.23 Nov.1869, Erringden, aged 6.
- James TAYLOR, d.12 Mar.1882, Walsden, aged 77, son of John TAYLOR of Walsden.
According to the Watch Committee Book held at Manchester Library and transcribed by the Police Museum:
John Yates lived at Loom St/Bengal St.in 1843 and at 15 Pitt St.in 1851.
He joined as a watchman in 1830 and on 1 Oct. 1842 joined the new borough police in C Division based in Fairfield St. His Collar number was C67.
On 9 Oct.1845 he was promoted to Merit class with 2 shillings per week extra pay.
On 29 Oct.1857 a gratuity of £50 was paid to his family, in consideration of good service.
John Yates was based in the Ardwick area where he lived.
At the time John YATES married Betty HOPWOOD (1820), John gives his occupation as a Weaver.
Both state they were of St.Peters Parish. (Ref:OLPC).
