      The Paupers Grave.

Today I have roamed, through a graveyard wide,
Where the tombs of the dead stand side by side,
Immersed in thought, I viewed the graves,
On which the flowers, and green grass waves.

Solemn, was the pilence that reigned all round,
Tranquil, and quiet, was the burial ground,
Muffed, were the sounds of my footsteps tread -
As I wended my way, among the graves of the dead.

In rapture I gazed on the lovely scene, -
Where in days of yore I had of times been.
The air was laden with a sweet perfume,
T was the odor of roses that bloom in June.

The rich, and the great, here are laid at rest,
Their elaborate graves, deck the hilltops nest,
Young men and maidens likewise lie here,
Summoned by - Death - from this earthly sphere.

Free for men from earthly cares, -
From sorrow and from woe, -
They have passed away to that unknown land.

There in turn we all must go.
Thouhg long dead they are not forgotten,
And for there we daily pray,
In Heaven we hope to meet them -
When from earth we pass away.

But see yon grave without a stone!
Why stands it there apart alone!
A stranger, that mound where the wild flowers wave,
Is all that remains, of a paupers grave.

Tell me the story, of this lonely tomb,
The name of its occupant, or was he unknown?
When was he buried, and where did he die?
Slowly, and sadly, then came this reply.

A tramp had died too faint to tell, -
The names of his friends, or where they dwell,
He died in the days long, long ago,
And his name, or birthplace, I do not know,

Thus, spoke my guide, and he turned to leave,
The lonely scene of the paupers grave.
Scared is the spot, so softly tread -
And murmer a prayer, for the soul of the dead.

Forsaken by all, uncared for, unknown,
Sad was he end, and the fact we own,
Yet, he is as happy, in a paupers grave,
AS if laid in the tomb where the roses wave.

For on the last day when the trumpet will call,
Into the great judgement, each men one and all,
Before their Creator they will be arrayed,
While their good, and bad, actions most duly are weighed.

Thus, justice will be shown, unto the lone poor,
Who on earth, have been spurned from the epicures door,
The Gold cannot shelter, the vile deeds of sin.
And the poor, lonely, tramp, will be welcomed by HIM.
