Notes.
I can find no record of the Marriage of John BUDD to Rachel.
There would be little information recorded as the marriage preceded Civil Registration (1837).
This makes me wonder if John and Rachel could have married in Oldham in one of the Non Conformist Churches which are often not listed on the IGI (International Genealogical Index).
Their daughter, Hannah, was born 23 Dec.1828 in Oldham (see Censuses).
A John HEARTLEY married Rachel HARDMAN, of Oldham, 6 Apr.1828, St.Marys Church, Prestwich.
The two Witnesses were John GRIMSHAW and Abrm.KAY.
In the 1841 England Census (taken on night 6 Jun.), John (Hartley) Budd, his wife, Rachael (Hartley) Budd and two children are resident at Long St. (Ancoats) Manchester.
Also resident in Long St. is John (Hartley) Budd brothers family, Henry (Hartley) Budd and family at No.48.

In a 1841 Directory of Manchester, a John Hartley is recorded as a Beer Retailer at 18 Long St. Ancoats.
I could not find John (Hartley) Budd and family in the 1851 England Census.
But it must be remembered, that part of the 1851 Manchester Census was water damaged, due to a flood.
However in a 1850 Directory of Manchester, a John Hartley is recorded as a Beer Retailer of Chapel St. Gt.Ancoats St.
Rachel death (1852) according to her Death Certificate, was 6 Jan.1852.
Cause of death was Chronic Bronchitis and Anasarca (excessive fluid).
At the time John BUDD married Elizabeth ROBERTSHAW (1854), John is resident at Chapel St.Ancoats, and is a Boiler Maker.
John gives his fathers name as John BUDD, and his fathers occupation as a Coal Merchant.
Elizabeth is resident at Deansgate.
Elizabeth gives her fathers name as Francis LEDLEY, and his occupation as a Carder.
Both had been previously Widowed.
The two witnesses to the marriage, Samuel Hartley BUDD and Jane Hartley BUDD, are John HARTLEYs, son and daughter-in-law.
In the 1856 letter from John Budd in Manchester to his brother, William Hartley Budd in Australia, John writes:
This leaves me and my and Family in the enjoyment of good health at present hoping it will find-you and yours the same thank God for it.
I have to inform you that my Wife Rachael Died on the 17th Day of January 1852 and was buried at the Ardwick Cemetery.
I have now got married to the widow of the late William Robertshaw of the Unicorn inn Deansgate Manchester and it is about 2 years since and I still kept the House on in Deansgate the same as it was there is four Children but there is only one of her own a boy about five years old we are living comfortable at the Boiler yard and only go to the other House in Deansgate as occasion requires.
I have Built 3 good Houses and I have Built Workshops for letting off all round the yard and I have two Steam Engines and one of Fairbairns Patent Riveting Machines and when all things are in proper order we can put 18 Rivets in in a minute and I have all things complete about-the Machine I have also 3 punching engines and 1 pair of Rollers etc etc and I am very well Settled in business and comfortably.
At the time John HARTLEY married Agnes KENWRIGHT (1857), John is aged 50 years, is resident at Great Ancoats Street and is a Boiler Maker.
Unfortunately he does not gives his fathers name or his fathers occupation.
Agnes gives her age as 40 years and is resident at Chapel St. Ancoats.
She gives her fathers name as Edward BOOTH, and his occupation as a Publican.
Both had been previously Widowed.
The two witnesses to the marriage, Hannah YATES and Thomas YATES, are John HARTLEYs, daughter and son-in-law.
The previous marriage of Agnes, is yet to be found.
In the 1861 England Census (taken on night 7 Apr.), John (Hartley) Budd, and his third wife, Agnes (Hartley) Budd, are resident at 75 Chapel St. (Ancoats) Manchester.
Chapel St.is adjacent to Long St.
It appears Agnes may have overstated her age, due to the age difference with her husband, John.

John Hartley tragically hung himself in his workshop in Palmerston St.
Prior to his suicide, he had been drinking heavily, and had been bothered by money matters.
The following article regarding his Inquest, appeared in the Manchester Courier Newspaper, dated Thursday, 5 May 1864.
Suicide By Hanging - Yesterday, Mr.Herford, the city coroner, held an inquest on the body of John Hartley, aged 61 years, late of Hartleys-buildings, Palmerton-street, boiler maker.
On Monday afternoon, about half-past three, the deceased was found by his sister hanging by a rope to a beam in his workshop.
Assistance was obtained and the body cut down, but life was quite extinct.
The deceased had been drinking a good deal of late. He had been much troubled in his mind, and had been annoyed with money matters.
The jury returned a verdict finding that the deceased had hung himself whilst in an unsound state of mind.
It is said that the Boilerworks was gambled away, but it is unsure, whether it was John or his son, Samuel, who was responsible.
On the 8 Jan.1852, John Hartley, Boiler Maker, of 8 Chapel St.Ancoats Manchester, purchased Grave No.676, in the Ardwick Cemetery.
Buried in this grave is John and his first wife, Rachel, and Johns brother and sister.

The Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser, Saturday, 27 January 1844, reported the following Fatal Accident:
On Friday night week, a man named William Bell, in the employ of Mr.John Hartley, of the Victoria Boiler Works, Chapel-street, was killed under the following circumstances -
It appears that late on the evening in question, the deceased, together with a number of his fellow-men, were employed In conveying a boiler, by the Rochdale canal, from the works to the timber yard of Mr.C.Clegg, at the bottom of Portland-street.
When they arrived at the place, the men proceeded to raise the boiler, for the purpose of enabling them to get it removed from the boat, and Bell, together with another man, was engaged in inserting blocks under the boiler,
for this purpose, when it suddenly fell over towards the side, at which deceased was employed, fixing his head between the boiler and the side of the boat.
The other man engagedthere immediately ran to his assistance, and he was extricated in about ten minutes, but he was quite dead.
On examination it was found that a large block had been moved from its proper position, which was the cause of the boiler falling, and of course could not be the result of accident, and it is therefore supposed to have been removed by the decease himself.
An Inquest was held on th body before Mr.Chapman, on Saturday, when the jury returned a verdict of Accidental Death.
