The Chatham Lines were a series of defences and fortifications, designed to protect the Chatham Dockyards from land invasion.
He was buried on the 11 Oct.1812, at St.Marys the Virgin Church, Dock Rd. Chatham.
Unfortunately no Age or Occupation is given.
His youngest sons (William Hartley Budd) Death Certificate, states his father is a Soldier, but until I can find what Regiment he was in, I cannot find the origins of the family.
The Army records for this period have not been indexed as yet.
His widow, Hannah, appears to have remarried a Soldier, Samuel Hartley, as a Spinster under the surname Hiscock, hence the origins of the name Hartley.
Did Hannah marry a Hiscock after the death of her first husband, John Budd, before remarrying Samuel Hartley ?
Remember Hannah was Widowed with five young children.
Or consider the following secenario:
The church register stated, George HISCOCK, Yeoman, of the parish of Portsmouth, bachelor, and Hannah EVANS of this parish (Portsea) spinster,
married in this church by licence both signed in the presence of Robert HISCOCK and Judith HISCOCK.
Did Hannah have an older brother, Nathaniel ?
A Nathaniel EVANS married 20 Sept.1787, Elizabeth MORRIS, Gosport Hampshire.
The earliest I can place the family in Manchester, is 1 Feb.1829 (bapt. of Hannah, daughter of John and Rachael).
I have yet to find the marriage of John Budd to Hannah Evans, or a marriage of Hannah Budd to a Hiscock.
Samuel Hartleys occupation is given as a Soldier on his sons (Nathan) baptismal entry.
Where Samuel Hartley, became a Boilermaker, as his Occupation is given on his sons (Nathan) Marriage Certificate (1837) is Unknown ?
Parents were recorded as Samuel Hartley and Ann.
In possession of the Budd family in Australia is a Photo of a John Hartley, with the following inscription on the back:
