John William Devereux arrived in Portland Victoria (21 Mar.1836) having departed Hobart (circa 13 Mar.1836) on the Boadicea.
He would have more than likely have meet the Henty Brothers at Portland.
He was to become a Shepherd and Overseer at Rifle Downs Station of 35,000 Acres, 4 miles SW of Digby in Western Victoria, marrying in 1851 to Mary OSBORNE (b.circa 1830, Co.Armagh Ireland).
The marriage of John Devereux to Mary Osborne, preceded the Victorian Government registration of Births, Deaths & Marriages (1 Jul.1853).
Performed by the Rev.Dr.Francis Thomas Cusack Russell, who was the first Anglican Minister in the District of Wannon, serving from 1849 to 1874.
In Mar.1851, the Rev.Russell moved into his Residence, The Parsonage on the Wannon, located 6 miles south of Coleraine on the banks of the Wannon River, close to Tahara Bridge. the crossing to Merino.
Church records for this period give little detail, thus the Parents and Origins of Mary Osborne are Unknown.
John died tragically when coming home from the races with his son in a cart, when the horse bolted after going over a log, and John jumped out and tried to catch the reins.
He was found dead lying on his back with a ruptured liver. The cart had capsized.
Of John & Marys Children:
The eldest of the children, John William Devereux, on his death, the funeral left his daughters residence Wallacedale for the Branxholme Cemetery.
Alexander Devereux was born at Branxholme in 1853. As a youth he came to the Casterton District, and worked as a Shearer and a Road Contractor
until he acquired a large area of land at Pieracle.
On his marriage to Miss Annie Ball, he made his residence there, rearing a large family.
After the death of his wife, he married Alice, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs.S.Bull of Kilara.
Following the death of his second wife, Alexander purchased the property of Mr.A.Allnut at Oira Sandford.
Recently prior to his death the Homestead at Oira was destroyed by fire, cause unknown.
The Funeral left the residence, Spring View at Henty of his son (Edward.J.Devereux) for the Sandford Cemetery.
He was survived by two sons and four married daughters:
Alexander was predeceased not only by his two Wifes, but six of his children.
All 12 Children were borne by his first wife.
The second eldest son, Alexander William Devereux was killed in Action at Bullecourt France in 1917.
His name is commemeorated on the Strathdownie Honour Roll.
George Devereux was found dead on the road near his property at Mooralla near Cavendish. Shortly before, he had been seen, leading three horses pulling a dray and a harvester. It was presummed he suffered a similar fate to his father, as the horses had bolted and the cart had capsized.
An autopsy revealed he had suffered Heart Failure.
While being carried to the side of the road, to await conveyance to the morgue, the Funeral cortege of Mr.Steel was passing.
Imagine what went thru the minds of the Mourners.
George never married and was a successful land investor, having held land at Branxholme, Hamilton, Winninburn (near Coleraine) and at Mooralla.
He left a brother, Alexander of Myaring.
Hugh Owen Devereux died on his farm at Branxholme, of Congestion of the Lungs.
Married, he only had one daughter (Annie Margaret), who predeceased him.
Hugh was also the Poundkeeper at Branxholme.
William John Devereux died at Branxholme of Heart Failure. He was Unmarried.
Mary Ann Devereux went to work (circa 1879) as a servant in North Fitzroy for Edmund Finn, the noted Journalist, Author and Historian, who wrote under the pen name Garryowen, before he married her in 1892, aged 73 years.
The association produced at least three children:
Norma & Pearl, both trained as Nursing Sisters. Norma also trained to enter the Convent before marrying. They both managed and ran a Private Hospital in Thornbury, which was owned by their Mother, nursing many people thru the great flu epidemic, which swept the World in the 1920s.
Later Norma went bush to marry her Cousin, and during WW11, Mia Mia became a Maternity Hospital.
It was a White Weatherboard building consisting of 13 Rooms & Nine Beds.
Mary Ann Devereuxs marriage to Alfred Classon appears to have produced no children, but two children appear to have been adopted by the couple:
It appears the two Classon Children were babies that were left at the Mia Mia Hospital, and raised by Mary & Alfred. Alfred had three children by his first marriage.
How did Mary Ann Devereux begin her association with Edmund Finn ?
It is feasible that Mary was recommended by her Uncle, William Hartley Budd (1809-1888) who had married (c.1838) Marys fathers sister, Anne Devereux.
William Budd would have likely known Edmund, as two nights a week, William rode a horse (circa 1845), from his hotel near Donnybrook to Melbourne, relaying the news from Sydney for the Melbourne Newspaper, Port Phillip Herald, arriving in Melbourne at 4 am.
Around this time, Edmund was a journalist for the Port Phillip Herald.
Also around this time, a Thomas Hamilton Tracy Osborne was proprietor of the same Newspaper and later the Belfast Herald at Port Fairy.
But no relationship is known to Mary Osborne, mother of Mary Ann Finn (Devereux).
Edmunds first wife, was Annie Riedy, who bore him nine children, of which five lived to adulthood. For a short period, Annie was committed to the Yarra Bend Asylum, probably due to Post Natal Depression.
On her death on 23 Dec.1881, her son stated, she at last recovered her reason in heaven.
One of the daughters of this marriage, Annie Maria FINN b.1859, married (1882) Edward Ambrose OGrady of the Melbourne Titles Office. Their daughter Catherine OGrady (1890-1922) was buried with her noted Grandfather in the Melbourne General Cemetery.
No trace can be found for Phillip, the second youngest son of John Devereux & Mary Osborne.
However it is said that Phillip drowned in New South Wales in the Murrumbidgee River.
