20 Nov.1838, on the ship Hero of Malown (Malourn) arriving 1 Apr.1839.
She was accompanied by her younger unmarried sister, Rebecca SUTTON.
On arrival the ship was placed in Quarantine due to an outbreak of Measles and Small Pox, until
24 Apr.1839.
Her occupation was given as a Seamstress and fathers, a Farmer.
Mary Ann came to Melbourne via the sea, departing Sydney 4 Jan.1841, on the Jewess
arriving 11 Jan.1841, again accompanied by her husband and sister.
Her husband by occupation was a Carpenter and Joiner. Circa 1849 he was a
Grocer in Swanston St.(East Side), North of Bourke St. Melbourne.
He was a Protestant by religion.
Circa 1851 the family were resident at Condell St.Fitzroy Melbourne.
No trace could be found of William.
William appears to have at least two Siblings.
The cause of his death was Brights Disease.
Researching the Gildea family has been extremely difficult because of the
variations in the spelling.
eg: GAWDIE, GILDAY, GILDER, GILDIE, GILDRY, GOLDIE etc.
The Mystery of who came to Sydney in 1837 on the Adam Lodge from Ireland.
(See previous page).
Likely candidates, are a James KILDEA and wife, Mary (and child) are recorded as passengers.
Should this be GILDEA ?
Imagine an Irishman dictating his details (for example) to a Scottish Shipping Clerk ?
The Ships Register, records James as being Aged 24 yrs. a native of Co.Donegal and a Blacksmith by trade.
In the Argus Newspaper of 12 Oct.1853 a John GILDEA of Spring Creek, on the Ovens Gold Diggings Victoria, recently from America wishes to hear from
his brother, James formerly of Ballyshannon, Co.Donegal.
He called his resident in Macdonaldtown, Carlisle Villa, after his birthplace, Carlisle, Cumbria, England.
Peter had a brother, John, in Sydney.
Johns wife, Mary, died 6 Oct.1877, & is buried in the Balmain Cemetery.
John was resident at Erskineville Rd. Newtown.
