Saturday, 1 Aug.1914,
A Motor-Cycle Road Race way being run from Melbourne to Bylands. The turning point being near Alfred Budds residence, Dick was an interested spectator at the turning point, where the contestants in the race received refreshments.
Dick was in a stooping position and failed to notice the approach of one of the riders, who came at a solid pace. The Motor Cycle struck young Dick with such great force on the side of the face and head, rendering him unconscious.
It was at once seen that the boy was seriously injured, medical examination showed that Dick had sustained a fracture of the skull, and his nose was reduced to pulp, the bone being broken in three places, as well as other minor injuries

On Wednesday morning (4 Aug.1943) at Bendigo, where he has been working for the past three weeks. It is understood that he had the misfortune to fall into a concrete reservoir which was under repairs, and he suffered concussion, and a possible fracture of the skull.
It was several weeks before he was well enough to leave Hospital.
