Notes.
Nathan was baptised Nathan Wetherall Hartley, on the 19 Mar.1815, at St.Mary Magdalene Church, Gillingham Green, Gillingham Kent.
His abode was given as Brompton and his fathers occupation as a Soldier.
The origins of the name, Wetherall, are Unknown.
Nathan accompanied his half-brother, William Hartley Budd to Australia, on the ill-fated Hibernia, which was burnt at Sea (5 Feb.1833).
The two boys were the only Hartley survivors and were orphaned by the Shipwreck
Nathan returned from Hobart, Tasmania to London, England on the Adelaide in 1833.
It appears that Nathan used BUDD as a Second Christian Name in his family, in contast to his Half-Siblings from the First Marriage who used HARTLEY as a Second Christian Name.
Nathan was the product of his mothers second (or third ?) Marriage to Samuel HARTLEY, her first Marriage was to John BUDD.
At the time Nathan Hartley married Emma Goodhead (1837), Nathan is resident at 15 Pollard St.Manchester and is a Boiler Maker.
He gives his fathers name as Samuel Hartley, and fathers occupation as a Boiler Maker.
Emma is resident at 4 Billington St. Chorlton upon Medlock.
She gives her fathers name as William Goodhead, and his occupation as a Smith.
It appears Emmas father, William Goodhead remarried 7 Nov.1831, Maria Whotton, Burton on Trent.
In the 1841 England Census (taken on night 6 Jun.), a Joseph Goodhead and his wife, Ann Goodhead, are resident at Billington St. Chorlton on Medlock.
It is unknown if Joseph is a brother etc. of Emmas ?
A Joseph GOODHEAD married 19 Jun.1826, Ann GORTON, Manchester Cathedral.

There is also a nephew, Thomas Taylor.
An Esther GORTON married 1849 Joseph TAYLOR, St.Peters Church, Bolton.

In a 1863 Directory of Manchester, a Nathan Hartley is residence at 9 Newby St. Harding St.
In a 1865 Directory, a Nathan Hartley (Boiler Maker) is residence at 8 Goodwin St. Pendleton.
In the 1871 England Census (taken on night 2 Apr.), Nathan Hartley, his wife, Emma Hartley and five children are resident at 201 Ashton New Rd. Beswick Manchester.
Ashton New Rd. is an extension of Pollard St. and Beswick is adjacent to the Manchester suburb of Ancoats.
By 1871 a son Albert is deceased (1863) and it appears the eldest daughter, Elizabeth, has left home.
The father, Nathan, birthplace is recorded as Brumten Flintshire Wales, whereas in the previous two Censuses, his birthplace is recorded Brompton Kent.
Maybe Brompton was recorded as Brumten, as the P is silent in Brompton. Where Flintshire came from is a mystery?
There is neither a Brompton or Brumten in Flintshire.

When Nathan Hartleys youngest son, Robert Hartley, enlisted in the East Yorkshire Regiment on 20 Jun.1886, he gives his fathers address as All Souls, Manchester.
On Roberts birth (1864), he was presented with a Bible by his Great Uncle, John Hartley, which has the following inscription, written in John Hartleys own handwriting:
Robert Hartley his book and a present from his Great Uncle, John Hartley of Leversham In the 91 year of his age.
In possession of the Budd family in Australia is a Photo of a John Hartley, with the following inscription on the back:
John Hartley. Aged 91. Levenshulme.
It appears that John Hartley was a brother of Nathans father, Samuel Hartley.
It was Samuel Hartley who perished on the Hibernia, on the voyage to Australia.
A John Hartley was baptised 17 Mar.1776, St.Thomas Church, Heaton Norris, Lancashire. Parents recorded as Samuel Hartley and Ann.
In the 1851 England Census, a John Hartley is a lodger at the residence of William Hadfield, Walkers House, Levenshulme Lancashire.
John is recorded as a Widower and disabled.
William is unmarried and may have been an uncle of John Hadfield, who married Elizabeth Hartley (1862), who was a Great niece of John Hartley, see: Elizabeth Hartley (m.Hadfield) b.1841.
Living nearby in Stockport Road is an Elizabeth Hulme (married to Samuel Hulme) who is also a Shopkeeper Sweets etc.
As William had the same occupation as Elizabeth, and lived with an Ann Hulme in the 1841 Census, he may have been in partnership with Elizabeth.
