      Robert Hartley enlisted in the East Yorkshire Regiment on 12 Feb.1885, at Beverley, East Yorkshire.
      He gives his occupation as a Labourer, birthplace as All Souls, Manchester, his fathers address as 15 Shooter St. All Souls, Manchester, and his brother, as Edward Hartley of the 103 Dublin Fusiliers.
      Described as 66 inches in height, 123 lbs in weight, Complexion Fair, Eyes Grey, Hair Brown, and Religion C of E.
      His Regimental Number was 1410.

      Subsquently Robert worked as a Gaoler on Robben Island.

      In the 1911 England Census (taken on night 2 Apr.), Leonard Klemm Hartleys future wife, Ruby Rose Darvill, is living with her married sister, and her sisters husband, at 135 Abbeyfield Rd. Rotherhithe London.
      Herbert states he has been married less than one year, and has had no children.
      He also states he is a Corporal, A.O.Corps.
