I could not find Ruth (Chappell) or her husband, Thomas Thornley Allen, in the 1891 or the 1901 Census.
The Allen family appeared to have emigrated to Australia in four stages:
- George Allen arrived as an Assisted passenger, 2 May 1883, Sydney, abroad the Allanshaw.
He is recorded as single, aged 24 years, born Cheshire, and is a Bricklayer.
He states his parents are John & Elizabeth, of Cheshire, and he has no relatives in the Colony.
- Thomas Allen arrived as an Unassisted passenger, Sydney, 23 Oct.1885, abroad the Gulf of Venice, departing London, 17 Aug.1885.
The Gulf of Venice was bound for Adelaide, Melbourne & Sydney, via Plymouth & the Cape of Good Hope.
Thomas is recorded as single ? aged 24 years, English, and is a Carter.
Also accompanying Thomas, was his brother-in-law, William Chappell, who is recorded as single, aged 23 years, English, and is a Labourer.
- John Allen arrived as an Unassisted passenger, Melbourne, abroad the Cuzco, departing London, 16 Sept.1886.
The Cuzco was bound for Adelaide, Melbourne & Sydney, via Plymouth.
John is recorded as single ? aged 57 years, English, and is a Brickmaker.
Johns Death Certificate stated he spent 8 months in Victoria, and 13 years in NSW.
- A Ruth Allen (aged 27) and a George Allen (aged 6) are recorded as passengers on the Austral, which departed 20 Jun.1890, London, bound for Adelaide.
Also on board, is an Unnamed Female Allen (aged 50) who is a Seamstress.
She may have been Ruths mother-in-law, Elizabeth Allen.
The Allen family were pioneers of Broken Hill, settling in West Broken Hill, and building the Allendale Hotel (named after the family) on the corner of Morgan & Jones St.
John tranferred the Hotel license to his son, George, on 1 Feb.1893.
John, died in 14 Sept.1899 (aged 70), and his wife, Elizabeth, died at her sons, Thomas, circa 29 Jun.1914 (aged 85).
Both are buried in the Broken Hill Cemetery (Anglican Section H, Grave No.20).
In May 1908, George sold all his interests in Broken Hill & moved to Camperdown, Sydney.
The Allen family sponsored the Allendale Sports, which were one of the features of Broken Hill on Boxing Day, which included Foot and Horse racing events and various amusements, such as Sideshows.
Electoral Rolls show Thomas Allen resident at Broken Hill, NSW circa 1908-1925.
- 1908-1917, Morgan St.
- 1919, 337 Jones St.
- 1922-1925, 254 Oxide St.
Thomas Thornley Allen lived opposite the Allendale Hotel on the corner of Morgan & Jones St.
For 30 years he worked in the Electrical department of the Proprietary mine.
Thomas took a keen interest in Sport & public affairs.
Bicycle racing was his chief interest, a President of the League of Wheelmen for three years, and an officer for about 14 years.
An Umpire for Cricket matches, a Member of the North Broken Hill Football Club, and he also served a few years on the Appeal Committee of the Barrier Ranges Football Association.
Thomas was one of the oldest members of the local branch of the Federated Engine Drivers and Firemen's Association, only four members who joined prior to him.
He also joined the Silver Star Lodge of the U.A.O.D. shortly after its formation.
Circa 1899, Thomas applied for a license for a Hotel he was to build on the corner of Williams & Bromide St.
The Hotel was to consist of 28 rooms and named the Federal Hotel.
The Application was refused, as it was deemed unsuitable for the area, and the hotel was never built.
Thomas is recorded as an Engine Driver & Engineer.
George, the son of Thomas, was one of the foundation pupils of the Broken Hill Technical College.
In Nov.1905, he obtained a Sydney Technical College Dipolma of Assaying.
He worked as a shift boss at the Central mine.
George was resident with his parents at Broken Hill, circa 1908, and later appears to have moved to Adelaide, where he ran the Refreshment Kiosk on the Semaphore Jetty, circa 1920-1926.
The Medley brothers (nephews), William and Richard, both lived with the Allens when thay came to Australia.
See Web Page, Emma Chappell (m.Medley) 1860-1930.
Circa Nov.1925, Thomas and his wife, Ruth, both went to Adelaide to live with his married son, George, ending the Allen family association with Broken Hill.
A Thomas Thornley Allen is recorded as sailing from Adelaide on the Strathnaver, bound for London, (departed Brisbane, 30 May 1935).
His age is 64 years, and he is a retired Electrician.
He gives his proposed address as, 16 Onslow Rd. Layton Blackpool.
This is the address of his wifes sister, Alice Marshall, at the time of her death (1944).
A 1936 Directory shows Thomas residence with his son, George (a Clerk) 54 Dale Ave. Croydon Park, Adelaide.
