Raymond George Barrows (1927-1982) worked for 23 years as a Bell Captain at the Key Biscayne Hotel in Miami.
On 1 August 1980, Raymond Barrows and his brother-in-law, Dr.Juan Dumois, loaded their boat onto the trailer around 5 p.m. It was a long day of fishing with the Dumois boys.
As they pulled out of the parking lot, the family was approached by a man pushing a bicycle who asked for a ride because, he said, he had an injured ankle. Dr. Dumois put the mans bike in the back of the boat. The stranger got in the back seat of the family station wagon with the children.
In an audio tape from the Holmes Beach case file, Raymond Barrows, the lone survivor, describes what happens next.
About two minutes later, after we started riding on the highway towards Anna Maria. I just hurt, felt something. I felt some blood in my neck, around my shirt and my brother-in-law, too. And he was hollering louder then I was, said Barrows.
The stranger pulled out a .22 caliber revolver and shot Raymond Barrows, Dr. Dumois, and his two sons. The boat trailer jack-knifed, ending up on the west side of the road.
The gunman walked away from the scene. He headed toward a Foodway grocery store less than half a mile away.
The car accident caught the attention of a man across the street. That man was retired Colonel Robert Matzke. When Matzke catches up with the mysterious man at the Foodway parking lot, eyewitnesses say the two spoke briefly, and as Matzke started driving away in his Fiat, the stranger shot him.
With eyewitnesses watching, he escaped in a car investigators say he parked at the Foodway. Almost as if his actions that day were thought out well ahead of time.
It just seemed like nobody had a motive. Nobody had evidence. Nobody had anything but a brutal crime scene.
Eyewitnesses provided varying descriptions of the suspect. After several sketches, one circulated around the Bay area that was considered the most accurate. It put the suspects age between 30 and 35-years-old.
While Barrows survived the shooting on August 1, 1980, he would die just a couple years later. Barrows passed away from a heart attack on 6 May 1982 at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
After his death, FDLE investigators requested that the bullet, still lodged in his neck be removed. The bullet fragments were removed and ballistic tests were run, but didnt provide investigators any new leads.
Jay Romine has been the Chief of Police at Holmes Beach for the past 17 years. He says investigators chased down hundreds of leads but the case remains cold.
On August 1, 1980 at 5:00p.m, Dumois, his sons, and Barrows returned from a fishing trip and loaded their boat at the Kingfish Boat Ramp. After pulling away from the ramp, they were approached by a white male on a bicycle. The subject stated that he had injured his ankle and asked for a ride. He then loaded his bicycle into the boat and got in the back seat of Dumois station wagon with the children. Dumois pulled out and proceeded westbound on Manatee Avenue from the ramp. The subject immediately opened fire in the vehicle striking all of the victims in the back of the head with a .22 caliber weapon. The vehicle then jackknifed on the north shoulder of Manatee Avenue just west of the boat ramp. The subject then got out of the vehicle and rode westbound on Manatee Avenue on his bicycle.
Matzke, working in his yard at a nearby condominium, observed what had taken place and pursued the subject to the parking lot of a nearby grocery store. Matzke and the subject exchanged words, and he was shot in the head by the subject.
Witnesses then observed the subject load his bicycle in a tan colored vehicle at the grocery store and leave eastbound on Manatee Avenue.
