Sarah was previously married to John BARROW, who was a Boilermaker and owned a Boilermakers, Barrow and Company, in Hanley, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire.
The following entry appeared in a 1870 Directory of Staffordshire:
Barrow John, manufacturer of all kinds of steam engines boilers, locomotive and agricultural engine boilers, all kinds of boilers for hot water heating, kitchen boilers,

After Samuel and Sarahs marriage a dispute (Staffordshire Sentinel, 12 Feb.1876) erupted between Samuel and Sarahs brother, James Owen, who were both employed by Sarahs first husband.
James had collected monies on behalf of the business, refused Samuel entry to the premises, and assumed he had been taken in as a partner of the business.
It was settled in the High Court of Justice, Chancery Division, in favour of Samuel and Sarah.
Prior to her first marriage, Sarah Owen was a boarder at the residence of George Cole, at Hallgreen (Street or Road) Brierley, Staffordshire. 1851 Census (taken on night 30 Mar.).
Also a Boarder at the same residence, was her future husband, John Barrow.
