Born at Kyabram and educated at St.Marys Covent Tatura, before moving to Rushworth and the local Secondary School.
Together with her Twin Sister, Kaye, she trained at the Austin Hospital in Heidleberg as a Nurse, after which the two, joined the RAAF Nursing Service.
In Feb.1944, Mainie was one of 15 successful volunteers, selected to form the elite new Medical Air Evacuation Transport Unit.
Selection criteria for the new unit was rigid.
Nurses had to pass a range of Survival Tests, including exposure to lack of oxygen while flying, exposure to rough flying, and the ability to swim.
After training, the Unit was stationed at Nadzab, New Guinea, taking over Evacuations from the Americans.
Mainie flew over 1000 hours with pilots to rescue sick and wounded soldiers, from the frontline in the Pacific Islands, often in intolerable conditions, not least of all was the tropical weather.
In all, she worked in one of the most difficult Theatres of the War, constantly under enemy fire.
Because of their Humanitarian Work, the nurses became known as the Flying Angels
In May 1945, a new Unit was formed (No.2 A.E.T.U), based at Morotai in the Halmahera Islands, and Mainie was again a Founding Member.
With the end of the War came a shift in priorities.
As Sister in Charge at Singapore during the evacuations of POWs, she witnessed the results of some of the horrendous wartime atrocities.
Arriving back in Australia, she became an Air Hostess.
Her second husband, Len Bell, was a returned POW, who spent time in the notorious Changi Prison, in Singapore.
