Remarkable Cave
Tasman National Park, Tasmania (2005)

What's so remarkable about this?
Look closely at the opening in the far distance. What do you see...?

Why, it's an outline of Tasmania, of course! 'Remarkable...!', somebody mutters.

Make no mistake, down here facing into the cave is not a safe place to be, but I was determined to get the image after 3 years of careful planning.

This image was made as the furious rushing tide flowed out through the cavernous opening and back to the sea. Foolhardy or no, I had climbed off the steel gantry after first lowering the camera and tripod down along ropes to the rock-strewn surface below, safely behind a gigantic boulder. Having got 'steady friend' and 'Brutus' into position, I then leap-frogged over the barrier down to join the pair waiting for me. There was always the grim expectation of perhaps being swamped then smashed to smithereens against the sides of the cave that extends all around this image. Never ever trust the water here. The image was timed for the outflow of water, shot from on top of a huge boulder that had broken metal fixings: telltale signs of a gantry that had, once upon a time, been swiftly destroyed by the wild forces of nature here.
