The fifth child of John BARFORD/BEDFORD/BAREFOOT and Elizabeth CHURCH, Ann was the first of their children to be born after moving from Parramatta, New South Wales, to Van Diemen's Land. The first record we have for her is the 1821 Muster of Free Persons and Convicts at Port Dalrymple (later Launceston, Tasmania).

Deaths in the District of Kyneton, Victoria. [Vic 13961]
Ann HOCKEY Widow, died 9 October 1896 aged 74 yrs Kyneton Hospital d/o Michael BARFOOT/unknown. Cause of death: Exhaustion and Carcinoma of Liver. Informant was Daniel HOCKEY, Son, East Trentham. Death was registered 18 November at Kyneton. C CASSIDY certified that the burial took place 10 October 1896 at Tylden Cemetery. The Roman Catholic service was conducted by Rev EJ Keating. It was stated that the deceased was born in Tasmania, had lived for 24 years in Tasmania and 50 years in Victoria and was married in Tasmania at the age of 17 years to James HOCKEY.
Issue in order of birth, their names and ages: Matilda 56, Ellen 55, Eliza dead, Annie 52, Elizabeth 50, Daniel 42, Charlotte dead, Melvena dead, Jane dead, James dead.

(Information provided by the informant about Ann's father was incorrect. Ann was the daughter of John BARFOOT and Elizabeth HEANY/CHURCH. Michael BARFOOT was Ann's brother.)

James HOOKEY alias HOCKEY aged 27, Ticket of Leave, Butcher, and Ann BAREFOOT aged 18, Free, married on 1 Apr 1839 in the Parish Church of St John's Church, Launceston according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the United Church of England and Ireland by Banns, with the consent of Government by Rev. W.H. Browne, Minister in the presence of James (hisXmark) GUNTON and William JONES (who witnessed all marriages on this page). James HOOKEY signed, Ann made her mark X. [R/N 278]

Deaths in the District of Taradale, Victoria. [Entry No 428, Vic 10338]
Daniel James HOCKEY, Farmer aged 64 years, died 29 November 1870 Elphinstone. Cause of death: Dropsy of the whole body, 5 months, last seen by W B ATKIN on 25 Nov 1870. Informant was Daniel James HOCKEY (hisXmark) Son, Elphinstone. Death was registered 29 Nov 1870 at Taradale. John STARR (son-in-law) certified that the burial took place on 30 Nov 1870 at Elphinstone with a Wesleyan minister. Witnesses to the burial were Richard CASSIDY and Henry ALLEN (sons-in-law). It was stated that the deceased was born in Shepton Mallet, parents unknown, had lived about 40 years in Tasmania and 23 years in Victoria and was married in Launceston at 30 years of age to Ann BARFOOT.
Issue in order of birth, their names and ages: Matilda 32, Helen 30, Eliza 28, Annie 27, Elizabeth 25, Charlotte 23, Melvina 21, Daniel James 16.

(No mention of his previous marriage to Rachel BAFUE which produced two daughters, one of whom emigrated to Victoria in the 1860s.)

James HOCKEY, Wife and 6 children are thought to have departed Launceston Van Diemen's Land 29 Dec 1847 on the Julia Percy. (Children would be: Matilda, Ellen, Eliza, Ann, Elizabeth, Charlotte.)
However the Launceston Examiner of 22 Dec 1847 reported that James HOCKEY, wife and 3 children; and (his brother) Samuel HOCKEY, wife and child; departed Launceston on the schooner Will Watch on 20 Dec 1847 for Portland Bay.
