Application for Samuel Hockey to marry 7. Bridget BARFOOT (Ellen's younger sister)
In Dec 1839 Samuel HOCKEY made a second application to marry, this time for Bridget BAREFOOT. Permission was granted but no record has been found of this marriage.

A daughter Ann HOCKEY was born 17 Dec 1842 Black Forest, Launceston to Bridget and Samuel HOCKEY. [R/N 1273] (This is probably Isabella HOCKEY as no record of Isabella's birth has been found, nor a death of Ann in VDL bef 1847 when Sam and Bridget left VDL.)

Convict record of Samuel HOCKEY
Indictments for the Summer Assizes at Somerset 1829 [Ref ASSI 25/21/10] Samuel Hockey, labourer, late of Parish of Shepton Mallet Somerset, was tried on two main charges: firstly of stealing an ass worth twenty shillings belonging to Edward Kent on the 15 Jun 1829 at Shepton Mallet. He pleaded not guilty but was convicted and was transported for 14 years. Secondly Samuel Hockey was charged with stealing an ass worth thirty shillings belonging to John Forward on 15 Jun 1829 at Pilton Somerset. He pleaded not guilty but was committed on another indictment which refers to the first charge of stealing.
A previous conviction was cited. Samuel Hockey was convicted of felony at the General Quarter Sessions at the Castle of Taunton Somerset on 18 Oct in the fifth year of George 1V (1824). (Samuel would have been aged 13 yrs.) [Letter from PRO London to Laurel Merritt 14 Feb 1986]

Samuel HOCKEY, wife and child departed Launceston on the Willwatch, arrived Portland 20 Dec 1847 and reported in the Portland Guardian on 31 Dec 1847. (There are quite a few fuzzy dates about this.)
They must have separated soon afterwards as no more children were found. There was a family story that they had buried a child at the foot of Blue Mountain (west of Mt Macedon between Trentham and Blackwood) as they travelled back from Yass in NSW. For many years we wondered what happened to Bridget.

What happened to Bridget?

Bridget HOCKEY formed a relationship with James CLOVER abt 1851 at Kilmore, Victoria [estimated from death cert 5387 of James Clover in 1881]

Samuel HOCKEY in Geelong
In the early 1850s Samuel HOCKEY had a brickworks in Villamanta Street, Geelong and must have been doing quite well as he brought his elderly parents out from Somerset. They arrived as unassisted emigrants on the Star of the East departed Liverpool 4 Jul 1854, arrived Melbourne Sep 1854. (This was found in the days before the unassisted British emigrants were indexed and I found them under the name of HOCKLEY!) The passenger list shows Daniel 76 yrs, Ann 76 yrs, their widowed daughter Charlotte 34 yrs and her 4 daughters: Charlotte Ann 13, Eliza 12, Amelia 8 and Sarah 4.

Six months later the mother of Samuel HOCKEY, Annie HOCKEY ms REAKES died on 29 Apr 1855 in Geelong [Christ Church C of E burial records]

That same year Sam's daughter Isabella HOCKEY was married on 10 Dec 1855 at St Paul's C of E in La Trobe Terrace, Geelong to William Walter GUY. The story goes that he was enticed by news of the gold findings and had worked his passage to Port Phillip as a galley hand and so no record of his arrival about 1852 has been found. He had been a clerk in a shipping office in London but had some connection with Chichester in Sussex. His parents were William GUY, Brewer, and Jane YOUNG.
Soon after he left the ship in Melbourne he met a mate who worked on the gold escort from the goldfields in Ballarat. In 1855 William Walter GUY was a storekeeper at Woady Yallock and a miner when their first child was born early in 1857 on the Mount Misery Diggings. In all, eleven children were born to Isabella and William in the Smythesdale area of Kangaroo Gully (later to be known as Berringa) and Staffordshire Reef.

Daniel HOCKEY Snr had lived for 6 years in Victoria when he died on 23 Aug 1860 aged 87 yrs, in Virginia Street, Newtown, Geelong [Vic 8482] and was buried on 26 Aug 1860 in the Geelong West Cemetery. Sam was the informant and present at his father's death.

Samuel HOCKEY then moved to the same area as his daughter Isabella and was living at Rokewood when he re-married in 1871 with no mention of his first marriage to Bridget.
