According to an article at Genuki the Parish of Gartly belonged in part to Banffshire before the major realignment of parish and county boundaries came into effect on 1 May 1891. Backburn and Gartly were locations concerned in the transfer of the Barony of Gartly to Aberdeenshire. OPRs, civil registrations of BMDs and census records are treated as belonging exclusively to Aberdeenshire but land taxes and transfers may be listed under Banffshire.

John BURRELL chr 27 Aug 1905 Church of Scotland, Cottard Place, Stow, Midlothian Scotland [R/N 169 cert]
John BURRELL was a mining engineer who became manager of a tin mine at Epoh near Kuala Lumpur in Malaya. During WW2 as a member of the British Citizens Military Forces he was taken Prisoner-Of-War by the Japanese. For three and a half years he was in Changi Prison and on the Burma Railway. At the fall of Singapore in January 1941 Mabel, her two daughters and 4 month old baby son were evacuated to Melbourne, Australia on the ship Orion. They lived with Scots, Beatrice and 'Dadda' MURRAY in Manifold Heights, Geelong, Victoria. After the war John and Mabel were reunited in Edinburgh, Scotland. Mabel and the children returned to Geelong for the children's education. John resumed tin mining in Malayasia with six months leave every three years and finally retired to Geelong.

Bill served an apprenticeship as a surveyor and was Under Manager at Niddrie Colliery. Address in 1958 was 16 Niddrie Cottages, District of Newington, Edinburgh.

2. Isobel Mary POTTS b 1930 prob Edinburgh m 1951 at Portobello, Midlothian, Scotland, Donald BRITTON occ Dancer with Saddlers Wells Ballet Company.
In 1947 Isobel won a scholarship to Saddlers Wells Ballet Company. Her stage name was Maureen BRUCE. They had one son who was raised by his grandmother, Mrs Potts, while his parents toured with the ballet company. Donald danced the lead in the 'Pineapple Doll' with the Royal Ballet on tour in Australia. They were separated by then, later divorced, both remarried, spouses names unknown.
