William (Walter) GUY was born 16 Jul 1830 Stepney, Middlesex, England s/o William GUY, a Brewer, and Jane YOUNG.
In the 1851 British Census [HO 107 folio 1552 piece 231] William GUY Jnr aged 20, was living at 12 Turner Street, Tower Hamlets, Borough of Stepney, County of Middlesex. Also in the household were his parents, a maiden aunt, his seven sisters and his only brother. In 1852 at the age of 22 William immigrated to Australia. The family story is that he worked his passage as a galley hand. (No shipping record has been found.) He met up with a mate who was working in the office of the gold escort and he got William a job on the gold escort from the Ballarat diggings. He became a miner and by the time of his marriage he was storekeeper on the diggings at Kangaroo Flat (later known as Berringa). On 10 Dec 1855 William Walter GUY married Isabella HOCKEY at St Paul's Church of England in La Trobe Terrace, Geelong, Victoria [Vic 3055] He died 11 Mar 1917 aged 86 yrs Staffordshire Reef, about 25km SW of Ballarat, Victoria [Vic 428] and was bur 12 Mar 1917 Staffordshire Reef Cemetery. Isabella HOCKEY was born 1840 Launceston, Tasmania d/o Samuel HOCKEY and Bridget BARFOOT.
