So on balance it seemed that William Walter GUY was born in Chichester, Sussex. However a researcher failed to find the birth of a William Walter GUY in any of the Chichester parishes or surrounding ones and two census records say he was born in Middlesex.

In London William GUY was working as a clerk in a law office. In his early twenties he sailed to Australia in 1852/3 and became a storekeeper on the goldfields near Ballarat, Victoria. We have no shipping record and according to a family story he worked his passage to Victoria as a galley hand, which is quite believable as he lived so close to the London Docks on the River Thames. Stepney has an ancient association with the docks and the river.

We have six old photographs of GUY family members taken by Barnes and Son Photographers, Mile End Road. (poss taken abt 1860). They are of William GUY Snr, his wife Jane GUY (ms YOUNG), son Robert GUY, Robert's wife (unnamed, now known to be Sophie), daughters Marian GUY and Lucy GUY. GUY family photographs
