Eliza BANKS m1. John HILL, Mason, in 1832 at Bradford, Wiltshire, England. John HILL b abt 1809 England, died 1865. His occupations were 1832 Mason, 1842 Miner, Quarryman, 1846 Employed by Mr Fisher, McQuarrie Street, Hobart.
Arrival of Eliza and her first husband John HILL 1842 Van Diemen's Land
John HILL, miner and quarryman, aged 33 yrs, C of E, could read and write and wife Eliza HILL aged 31 yrs and children George, under 14 yrs, and Eliza under one year arrived on Orleana Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, 4 Jul 1842. The ship sailed from Plymouth via London on 21 Mar 1842 with general cargo and 276 Bounty Emigrants (89 men, 78 women and 109 children). Master was Alexander CAMERON. The Orleana sailed from Hobart Town on 24 Jul 1842 for Bombay.
The Hill family were settled in Victoria by 1849.

Samuel HOCKEY died 2 Mar 1886 aged 70 yrs Rokewood, Leigh Shire County of Grenville, Victoria s/o Daniel HOCKEY, Butcher, and Annie ms RAIKES, bp Shepton Mallet, England, 40 yrs in Victoria, married in Tasmania, aged 20 yrs to Bridget BARFOOT. Issue: Isabella aged 44 yrs. Informant was Thomas SIMPSON, Grandson, Laborer, Rokewood. Samuel was bur 4 Mar 1886 Rokewood Cemetery C of E in a double grave with Eliza. Witness to the burial was William GUY (Sam's son-in-law, husband of Isabella) [Vic cert 3396]
At the time of his death Samuel HOCKEY was Hotelkeeper of the British Hotel at Rokewood. He was also the owner of 7 acres known as the Lyons Paddock at Rokewood. He left a detailed Will dated 12 Jan 1884. Probate was granted 26 Oct 1886.

(Note: James, brother of Samuel, died in 1870 at Elphinstone. He never lived in the Rokewood area. This publican's licence must surely be for Samuel Hockey.)

This is the last Will and Testament of Samuel Hockey of Rokewood.
I hereby devise and bequeath to my wife Eliza Hockey for her life and after her death to my daughter Isabella GUY of Staffordshire Reef all my property known as the British Hotel, Rokewood, her heirs and executors for her own use and benefit and to my grandson Thomas Simpson the paddock known as Lyons Paddock, 7 acres or thereabouts, for his sole use and benefit, And I appoint Mr Robert Wallace and Alexander MacClimont as Executors to this my will. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this twelfth day of January 1884 one thousand eight hundred and eighty four - Samuel Hockey - Signed by the said Samuel Hockey in the presence of us present at the same time and in the presence of each other all stand and subscribe our names as witnesses hereto. Benj. Sargeant Alexr MacClimont.
Benjamin SARGEANT of South Yarra, Gentleman, witnessed the appointment of Robert WALLACE and Alexander MacLIMONT, both of Rokewood, Farmers, as executors of the Will of Samuel HOCKEY, 12 Jan 1884.
Eliza HOCKEY died four months after her husband on 14 July 1886, Rokewood Leigh Shire, aged 72 yrs, d/o Henry BANKS, Cloth Worker, and Hannah BANKS ms not known (BANKS). Cause of Death: Old Age. Informant: Thomas SIMPSON, Grandson, Laborer, Rokewood. Born Wiltshire England, 36 yrs in Victoria. Married 1. Bradford Wiltshire England, aged 18 yrs to John HILL, m2. aged 67 yrs to Samuel HOCKEY. Issue by former marriage: Harriet HILL 47 yrs, Emma HILL 44 yrs, Mary Jane HILL 40 yrs, Henry dead. No issue by second marriage. [Vic10765]
