Two Common Gaming Houses - Ballarat East Petty Sessions 1897

VPRS 290 Ballarat East Petty Sessions Unit 44
Cases heard on 5 July 1897 following a police raid on 4 July 1897 in which thirty-one men were arrested.
The first defendant was AH LIP who was charged with 'being the keeper of premises used as a common gaming house'. Admitted the offence, fined 40/- with 15/- costs. All monies seized by police to be confiscated. Amount seized was 1.18.3.
The charge for AH HING, the second defendant, was 'did assist in conducting premises used as a common gaming house'. Admitted the offence, fined 20/- with 2/6 costs. An amount of 1/4 was seized by police.
For twenty-nine others the charge was 'being found in premises used as a common gaming house without lawful excuse'.
Those fined 2/6 were: HOCK HI, AH LOCK, AH KEE, AH HA, Charlie NUTT, AH KIM, AH TIN, AH FOOK, AH CHEONG, QUE WEY, AH TIE, AH QUONG, HAN TIE, AH SUM, AH ENG, AH FONG, LEN TOON, AH YEN, WEE HEE.
Those fined 1/- were: AH MOW, AH LUTT, AH LOY, AH HONG.
Those discharged were: WEA WOON, LEN WEY, PO HOCK, AH GON.
George ROSENINE and Patrick HOGAN were fined 10/-.

VPRS 290 Ballarat East Petty Sessions Unit 44
Cases heard on 9 October 1897 following 14 arrests on search warrant on 8 October 1897. The complainant was Ferguson BOYCE, Sergeant of Police, who alleged that William J DARK was the keeper of premises used as a common gaming house'. The case was adjourned to the 18th Instant. Bail was allowed on surety of 50 and himself in surety of 50.
The charge for each of the following defendants was 'found without lawful excuse in premises used as a common gaming house' : Horace ROWLANDS, William E HORMAN, George GREGORY, Walter FERGUSON, Charles BAKER, John ALLEN, Samson SALTER, Albert READ, John HOURIGAN, Vivian WILLIAMS, Evan ANTHONY, Edward H BOLTON and Arthur REID. Their cases were also adjourned to the 18th Instant.
When the men reappeared in court on the 18 October 1897 all were discharged.
