What to do in the garden |
|
Harvest - apples,
pears, nashi fruit, strawberries.
Rake gravel or soil paths
Trim back grass
edges
Net fruit trees as they
come into fruit
Pull out any summer crops that have been harvested.
Prepare empty beds for Winter crops.
Prepare empty beds for Winter crops by digging over and
adding fertiliser. If you are
planting Brassicas (cabbages, cauliflowers, Brussels sprouts and
broccoli) then add lime or dolomite to the soil to raise the Ph of
the soil (make it more alkali). This is because Brassicas
prefer alkali soils. Recommended dosages can be found on the
side of most bags of lime or dolomite.
I recommend that you add little or no animal manures as this will
tend to lower the Ph. Instead add blood and bone or chemical
fertilisers such as super phosphate. If you do add a lot of
animal manure then add more lime or dolomite to the soil than the
recommended dosage.
Apply
Derris Dust or
Bacillus thuringiensis
(Dipel) to Brassica plants.
Brassicas are the only vegetable plants I know that you
absolutely have to spray if you want them to survive as the cabbage
butterfly caterpillars will inevitable destroy them if you do not.
I suggest you use either
Derris Dust or
Bacillus thuringiensis
(commonly known under the brand name of Dipel). Or a
combination of both.
